THE MIGHTY SCARABS by Cornell Hubert Calhoun III

Audition Dates/Times:

            Tue, 8/16, 7:00 pm ­ 10:00 pm, Unitarian Church

Play synopsis: Twenty years have passed since the East Tech High School
Basketball Team captured the State Championship, a source of pride for its
community and followers. But did that One Shining Moment ultimately
contribute to their demise?  Hail to the Mighty Scarabs!
 
Characters: African-American Males late 30s to 60s, African American Females
20s to 40s
 
June Bailey: Ex-East Tech basketball Star, late thirties, lives in the past
----- walks with a cane, a self made poet, Gabby's mentor.
 
Slim Slim Payne: Member of the 1945 East Tech State Championship team,
drives the big rigs, loves the open road.
 
Girlena Chapman: Late thirties, attractive, former East Tech Cheerleader,
defined by her gorgeous legs, works at a local bar, a long history of
choosing the wrong men.
 
Ricks: Ex-basketball star, late thirties, mailman, played with June Bailey
on the team
that was the first all Black high school to win the state championship, has
always loved Girlena.
 
Johnny Dollar: Numbers Runner, middle 60's, flashy, colorful and funny.
 
Gabby Chapman: 15, Girlena's daughter, a female basketball player before it
was fashionable. She is bright, articulate, intelligent, glowing, and a new
poet.
 
Charles " Killer " Davis: Ex-con, former boyfriend of Girlena, a real
killer, incarcerated for fifteen years and on his way home.
 
Production dates:  January 24 ­ February 5, 2012
 
Audition:  Please bring one 2-3-minute dramatic monologue.  Readings from
the sides will be emailed upon request.  The full script is not available.
 
AEA contracts:  There are no AEA contracts available for this production.
Non-AEA contracts will pay $200 each.
