Lynnette Guttmann coached stars and helped lead the Beck Center for the
Arts.
Guttmann, a singer, actress, voice coach and Beck's education director,
died Aug. 26 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve from complications of
pancreatic cancer. The Lakewood woman was 53.
"We would sing and talk about life for a half-hour each week," said Rory
O'Malley, a former Guttmann student nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway.
"Lynnette had the ability to make her students dream bigger than they could
imagine and gave them the confidence to fulfill that dream. Her students
didn't just take her lessons to Broadway, they took them to succeed in every
profession."
Guttmann also won good reviews on stages, including at PlayHouse Square,
where she performed her "Cabaret Mod" and joined in the improvisational "Out
to Lunch." In 1994, The Plain Dealer's Marianne Evett wrote, "Lynnette
Guttmann has real comic talent [and] a wacky streak that serves her well."
Guttmann was raised in Parma and Middleburg Heights. She earned a
bachelor's degree in voice and music education from Wittenberg University and was
certified at Baldwin-Wallace University to teach French and German. She also
attended the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
She taught music in Bay Village public schools for two years. She became a
paralegal and head of information systems at the Hahn, Loeser firm. She
later worked as Beck's education director, helping hundreds of aspiring young
talents. For the past 10 years, she ran the Lynnette Guttmann Voice Studio,
steering many students toward success on and off Broadway.
She also acted and directed widely, especially at Clague Playhouse.
Favorite roles included Fraulein Kost, singing "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" in the
Beck's "Cabaret."
Survivors include her partner, Joan A. Tropf, her parents and a sister. A
memorial event will take place at 3 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Breen Center for
the Performing Arts at St. Ignatius High School.
