New Work Development Series

Request for Proposals

Leap/Conceive

Deadline for submissions is

September 16, 2011

In an effort to support and nurture new works of diverse style, discipline, and creative processes, CPT has created a new series entitled Leap/Conceive. This series gives artists the opportunity to develop and showcase short segments of larger works in-progress. Leap/Conceive will perform in the Fall of 2011.

What is Leap/Conceive?
Leap/Conceive is a work-in-progress showcase, which will consist of 5 to 15 minute segments of larger works that are at a mid-point in the creation process. The series will be presented over three nights, with the same selection playing each night: Nov 3-5.

CPT will select up to 10 artists. Each artist will receive 10 hours of rehearsal time at CPT over two weeks. Artists will develop a short segment of work and share that segment as part of the full evening.

Leap/Conceive shows should be developed into a workshop showing-no actors with scripts in hand, but no big sets and costumes. Leap/Conceive is about trying new ideas and sharing work in an open forum.

CPT provides a Stage Manager, box office and house staff, but it is up to each artist to provide their own artistic collaborators and all artistic needs-casting, design, writing, composition, etc.

Each project will receive $100.

CPT will promote the series through its season brochure, a press release, and a flyer, but it's really going to be up to the participating artists to get the word out. Since the work being done is in development, there will be no critics invited.

Leap/Conceive is open for any type of performance: choreography/dance, theatre, musical theatre, music, and work from multiple disciplines.

Selection for Leap/Conceive?

In selecting works for Leap/Conceive we will look at a number of factors.

Has the artist/group demonstrated the ability to produce and create the proposed work? We aren't looking for top notch producers, but we do want to feel confident that the artist/group has a clear understanding of what it takes to pull off a show, and that they understand how to assess their own capacity.

All artistic enterprises require risk and there are no guarantees. However, it's important to demonstrate a level of artistic excellence and an understanding of artistry. This might be demonstrated in a work sample, resume of artist, script of past or current work, or in a project summary.

Is the work adventurous and new? CPT has a history of producing work that no one else in town will produce because it is somehow "outside the box."

How will Leap/Conceive impact the applicant professionally and artistically? CPT wants to have a real impact on the community and provide resources to projects that will benefit the most.

Video materials are NOT necessary to apply for Leap/Conceive, but can be helpful in demonstrating work level.
