    Laughter's afoot as CVLT mounts /The 39 Steps/

CHAGRIN FALLS, OH - John Buchan's 1915 novel /The 39 Steps/ was a
popular WWI-era adventure, throwing unlikely hero Richard Hannay into a
whirlwind race across the UK as he tries to thwart the dastardly plot of
a secret German spy ring. When a young Alfred Hitchcock adapted /The 39
Steps/ for the big screen in 1935, he made substantial departures from
the book. Hitchcock's Hannay is an innocent man on the run (the police,
wrongly, of course, suspect him of murder) who finds himself reluctantly
accompanied by his accuser (who soon becomes his love interest). The
film is considered by many to be one of the best British movies of all time.

Patrick Barlow's wild spoof adaptation of /The 39 Steps/, which opens
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre's 82nd main stage season on October 7th,
owes more to the film than the original novel. Starting in small English
theaters in the mid 1990s, and opening officially in London in 2006, it
moved on to Broadway, garnering six Tony Award nominations (two wins)
among many other accolades and ran longer than any other Broadway play
of the decade before closing last year. Local audiences may recall the
popular production at Cleveland Playhouse last fall.

Barlow's /The 39 Steps/, under the direction of Daniel Takacs, at CVLT,
is equal parts thriller and farce. The story is told with just a handful
of versatile actors (Eric Oswald, Amy Pelleg, Lisa Tarr, Leah Frires,
and Michael Prosen) who play the various heroes, villains, men, women,
children, and even the occasional inanimate object in the story. Rolling
set pieces about the stage and changing costumes constantly, the small
troupe creates a hilariously big adventure.

/The 39 Steps/ plays Fridays and Saturdays, October 7 - 22, and
Thursday, October 20 at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, 40 River Street
in historic Chagrin Falls Village. All performances are at 8 PM. Tickets
are $16 per person, $12 for students and seniors, and are available
online at www.CVLT.org, or by phone at 440-247-8955, Monday through
Saturday from 1-6 PM. Complete details on CVLT's 82nd Season are
available online at www.CVLT.org.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is generously funded by Cuyahoga County
residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and is supported by the Ohio
Arts Council.
