Weathervane Playhouse in Akron -- in association with Mainstreet Musicals -- will welcome Tony Award-winning actor HAL LINDEN for a very special, one-night-only staged concert version of a new musical: Shine! The Horatio Alger Musical.

Under the direction of Marc Moritz, this special-event performance is designed to showcase a new musical and to serve as a fundraiser for both Weathervane Playhouse and Mainstreet Musicals (a New York City-based not-for-profit organization that coordinates a network of local theater festivals to introduce new, award-winning musicals in development to audiences throughout the United States).

AND...in addition to the special appearance of Hal Linden, WE NEED ADDITIONAL PERFORMERS!

This performance will require a fairly large ensemble of boys, girls, men and women between the ages of 15 to 70.

THE PERFORMANCE

One night only: Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will be presented on the Weathervane mainstage as a staged reading/concert. In other words, actors will be largely "on book" and the performance will feature minimal staging, costumes, set pieces and props.

The performance is designed to showcase a new musical as well as to serve as a fundraiser for both Weathervane Playhouse and Mainstreet Musicals (a New York-based not-for-profit organization that coordinates a network of local theater festivals to introduce new, award-winning musicals in development to audiences throughout the United States).

THE AUDITIONS

Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 at Weathervane Playhouse (1301 Weathervane Lane, Akron, 44313)

AUDITION TIME

6 to 9 p.m.

We have three audition-appointment slots: 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

HOW TO AUDITION

Please call the Weathervane Box Office at 330-836-2626 to schedule your appointment. Pick one of the three audition-time slots and be prepared to stay for the full hour.

Please prepare one song, preferably from a classic Broadway musical. The songs in Shine! are akin to those in the musical Ragtime with a strong, "Americana" feel. (Please do not, for example, prepare a Sondheim song.) Please bring sheet music with you; an accompanist will be provided.

You will also be asked to do a cold reading from the script. (The script will NOT be available prior to auditions.)

If you cannot call in advance for an appointment, simply arrive at the Playhouse as a "walk-in" on Sunday night shortly before your preferred audition-slot time.

ABOUT THE REHEARSALS

As this will be a staged concert version of the show, rehearsals will be minimal. Rehearsals will begin after Oct. 15. All cast members must be able to attend the final rehearsal on Sunday, Nov. 6. Additional rehearsal information will be provided at the auditions. Those cast in the show will receive their material in advance and will be expected to learn their music by the first rehearsal.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Shine! The Horatio Alger Musical -- described by Theatremania as "a charming, feel-good musical" -- follows the tale of Ragged Dick, Horatio Alger's first best-selling hero. Set in Lower Manhattan in 1876, Dick's adventures bring him face to face with scheming ex-convicts, vicious comic villains, kind benefactors and a world of colorful street characters in this charming rags-to-riches romp for the whole family.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

MARC MORITZ most recently directed Weathervane Playhouse's production of 3 Guys Naked from the Waist Down. He is a Northeast Ohio-based actor and director whose most recent directorial credits include A Raisin in the Sun (for TrueNorth Theatre) and The Walworth Farce and Guttenberg! The Musical! (both at Dobama Theatre). As an actor, he originated the role of Talk Show Host in the Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim/Hal Prince musical, Merrily We Roll Along. Most recently, he appeared on stage as Al Lewis in The Sunshine Boys at Porthouse Theatre.
