NWPL’s production of the ancient Sumerian epic Gilgamesh, directed by James Slowiak (co-artistic director), features company members Jairo Cuesta (co-artistic director), Justin Hale, and Debora Totti and is designed by NWPL resident designers Inda Blatch-Geib and Chris Hariasz. The epic Gilgamesh was written in Sumerian on clay tablets in cuneiform about 2100 BCE and became known throughout the ancient Middle East.

The key relationship in the story is between the tyrannical, semi-divine king, Gilgamesh, and a wild man, Enkidu, sent by the gods to tame the king. Instead of killing each other, the two form a bond of love and friendship and embark on a series of adventures.

Gilgamesh provides the cultural framework for NWPL’s unique physical style of performance and vocal investigations. The company intends to create a visceral performance that will stimulate a new look at this ancient, but remarkably contemporary, story.
