Kent State University at Stark Theatre announces open auditions for Anton in Show Business

Kent State University at Stark Theatre has announced open auditions for the season's spring play, Anton in Show Business by Jane Martin.

This madcap comedy follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole and into a strangely familiar wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre - the resemblance is uncanny! As these women pursue their dream of performing Chekhov in Texas, they're whisked through a maelstrom of "good ideas" that offer unique solutions to the three sisters' need to have life's deeper purpose revealed. In the tradition of great backstage comedies, Anton in Show Business conveys the joys, pains and absurdities of "putting on a play."

Auditions will be held on January 24 and 25 from 7-9 p.m. in the theatre of the Fine Arts Building, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. Should either audition date be canceled due to inclement weather, January 26 will be announced as an additional audition date.

Auditions are open to everyone, including students and community persons. Seven roles are available for women with an age range from 20s through late 30s. Those auditioning have the choice of working from sides (selected scene excerpts) or they may perform a prepared monologue. The director may, in addition, choose sides for people and scene partners.

The production will be performed on April 6, 7, 12-15 in the Kent State Stark Theatre. Rehearsals will commence on February 20, and will usually occur approximately five evenings a week until opening.

Audition appointments are recommended, but not required. Sign up for an audition time with the secretary of the Kent State Stark Fine Arts Building or call 330-244-5151. Scripts (and audition sides or scene excerpts used for the auditions) are available for perusal for periods up to 24 hours from the Fine Arts secretary, Monday through Friday, during business hours (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). Scripts and audition sides are also available in the reserve area of the Stark Campus Library.

There are also excellent technical production opportunities available for this imaginative show, including stage/assistant stage mangers, assistants to lighting, scenic, sound and costume designers and running crew. Those interested in such opportunities should contact Theatre Director Brian Newberg (contact information is below) or Louis Williams, theatre specialist, at lpwillia at kent.edu<mailto:lpwillia at kent.edu> or 330-244-3375.

For more information, contact Brian Newberg at 330-244-3352 or bnewberg at kent.edu<mailto:bnewberg at kent.edu>.
