ABOUT THE PLAY The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee (and all-around
mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. When the sweet,
good-natured elephant Horton hears a small cry for help coming from a small
speck of dust, he promises to rescue and guard it because “a person’s a person,
no matter how small. On that small speck of dust lives JoJo, an imaginative
young Who. JoJo has astounding “thinks,” in which anything’s possible, but his
parents believe this creativity is inappropriate for the son of the Mayor of
Who-Ville. Meanwhile, the one-feathered bird, Miss Gertrude McFuzz, desperately
wants Horton to notice her. Maybe, she thinks, she just needs a more impressive
tail. At the same time, the amazingly lazy Maysie La Bird connives, cajoles and
convinces Horton to sit on her egg while she goes off on a spree. Will the
planet of Who survive? Will Horton pay attention to Gertrude? Will Maysie ever
return for her egg? Dr. Seuss’s beloved classic characters find themselves
intertwined in an incredible crazy-quilt adventure, in which the power of
imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever save the day
Cast of Characters
Horton the Elephant: (our biggest role) is a big-hearted elephant who is
steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his/her
friends. She/He is imaginative, unselfconscious and very sincere.
Jojo: is a “Thinker”, a smart kid with a wild imagination that always gets
him/her in trouble. The whole story happens because of Jojoʼs imagination.
The Cat in the Hat: is full of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat is a
comic, clownish, over-the-top character, taking on many different
personalities. The Cat does sing but it is more of an acting role than a
singing role that can be played by a boy or a girl.
Gertrude Mc Fuzz: is very self-conscious, awkward and thinks that her
one-feather tail isnʼt “perfect”. She wants desperately for Horton to notice
her. She changes during the show from a nervous and shy bird into one with the
power an confidence to save the day.
Mayzie La Bird: is self-centered, selfish, and vain (think Sharpay “High School
Musical”). Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she
can into doing what she wants. She isnʼt all bad though.
Sour Kangaroo: has a lot of attitude! Sheʼs loud, bossy, confident, and a lot of
fun!
Mr. Mayor & Mrs. Mayor: (of Whoville) are Jojoʼs parents trying very hard to
raise a difficult child. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love her
very much and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.
The Wickershams: are monkeys from the jungle of Nool. They are buddies that like
to tease, play
pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at othersʼexpense.
The Bird Girls: are an all-girl singing group.
Yertle The Turtle: The Judge presiding over the trial of “The People vs.
Horton.”
Vlad Vladikoff: is the “bad guy” with one important line.
Who Citizens & Jungle Citizen: These characters have lots of singing and
dancing to do as a group. Some may have featured solo parts.
REHEARSALS will begin February 13, this will consist of 8 weeks of rehearsals,
3 - 6 times per week. The cast will receive the rehearsal schedule by the first
cast meeting or first rehearsal.
