Guitar virtuoso to perform at Kent State University at Stark



Kent State University at Stark Music Department kicks off the spring semester of events with a recital by acclaimed guitarist Jason Vieaux on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Main Hall Auditorium, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.



For the Kent State Stark audience, Vieaux will perform Bach's Lute Suite No. 1 in e minor, The Road to You by jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and Variations on a Theme of Handel, Opus 107 by Mauro Giuliani, in addition to other arrangements that will illustrate his entertaining and diverse talent.



Vieaux is a musician noted for virtuosic and stirring performances, imaginative programming and uncommon communicative gifts. His collaborations with many diverse artists display his broad range of musical interests. Recent career highlights include solo performances at Lincoln Center, Spivey Hall and the Chautauqua Festival. Vieaux has played with more than 50 major orchestras, and this season, he is scheduled to perform with the Buffalo and Ft. Wayne philharmonic orchestras, the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra and the symphonies of Richmond, Kitchener-Waterloo and Amarillo.



He has 12 CDs to his credit with a new solo disc coming soon. Vieaux's Bach; Works for Lute, Vol. 1 hit #13 on Billboard's Classical Chart a week after its release and received rave reviews by Gramophone, The Absolute Sound and Soundboard. His CDs and live performances are regularly broadcast on radio and the Internet and he also writes on classical music topics for NPR's Deceptive Cadence blog series.



In 2011, Vieaux co-founded the Curtis Institute of Music Guitar Department with guitarist David Starobin. He has been head of the Guitar Department of the Cleveland Institute of Music since 2001, and is also affiliated with Philadelphia's Astral Artists. He was the youngest first prize winner in the history of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Competition. Vieaux is a Naumburg Foundation Competition top prizewinner, a Cleveland Institute of Music Alumni Achievement Award recipient, a Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant winner and a former NPR Young-Artist-in-Residence. In 1995, Vieaux was a U.S. artistic ambassador to Southeast Asia and currently concertizes abroad to Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
