Soprano-guitar duo to perform at Kent State University at Stark

Kent State University at Stark Music Department presents a soprano-guitar recital by the musical duo Diane Menges and Brian Kozak on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. in Main Hall Auditorium, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

Soprano Menges and guitarist Kozak regularly perform in Northeastern Ohio as a duo, as soloists and with various ensembles. For their recital at Kent State Stark, they will present an afternoon of beautiful arrangements for voice and guitar, featuring English-American folk favorites, songs by Haitian guitarist Frantz Casséus, selected folk songs from a variety of countries, in addition to popular tunes, such as Quando, Quando, Quando and 'Deed I Do.

Menges and Kozak regularly collaborate and were the featured duo to open the Guitar Society's season of Local Artists and Rising Stars Series in November 2011. In 2009, they were featured in the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society's Virtuoso Showcase Concert performing Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 by Villa-Lobos. The duo is often requested to perform well-known works for guitar and soprano, along with many of their own arrangements and adaptations.

Menges enjoys an active concert and recital schedule throughout the greater Cleveland area. In 2007, she premiered The Jesus Project: a Musical Journey into the Life of Jesus Through the Eyes of Poets, a work which she created, produced and continues to perform with new music by Cleveland and New York-based composers. She has performed Mendelssohn's Elijah and Haydn's The Creation to positive reviews from CoolCleveland.com. She was Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at Toronto's Opera Atelier and last year, she sang Handel's Dixit Dominus with Choral Arts Cleveland. In May 2011, she appeared in The Three Sopranos at The Cleveland Institute of Music's Mixon Hall.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Baldwin-Wallace College with degrees in classical guitar performance, Kozak has been a featured solo performer at Capital University, Kent State University and Lorain County Community College, as well as for ensemble performances with the Baldwin-Wallace Motet Choir, the Lorain County Civic Orchestra and the Lakeland Civic Orchestra. A regular performer at the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland, as well as with Latin American, jazz, pop and rock ensembles, Kozak teaches music at Lorain County Community College and Cuyahoga Community College and directs the Childbloom Guitar Program of Cleveland.
