*MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND*
in loving memory of
*Debra Joan Wiener Streckal*
who passed away in
Alexandria, VA on
Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Debra Joan Wiener, who worked in theater and the nonprofit sector for more
than 25 years was 59. In Cleveland, Ms. Wiener was most recently a grant
coordinator, strategic planner and fundraiser for Ensemble Theatre, where,
in 2009, she organized an Ensemble  benefit to honor Cleveland's premiere
theatre couple  Dorothy and Reuben Silver . She moved to the
Virginia-Washington, D.C., area in 2010 to work in the nonprofit sector and
expand her consulting globally.

Ms. Wiener’s involvement in theater included acting, singing, writing and
directing. She began in theater with Cain Park, the JCC, Chagrin Valley
Little Theatre, Euclid Theatre, and others. Her roles included starring as
Susan B. Anthony in “If God Wanted Women” and as Stella in “A Streetcar
Named Desire” and directing a production of Arthur Miller’s “A View from
the Bridge.”

Ms. Wiener served community organizations as a grant writer and a
volunteer, and she was a manager or executive director for six nonprofit
boards, including The Tom Evert Dance Co. and The Repertory Project. The
recipient of numerous awards, she was honored in 1991 with President Bush's
national 655th Point of Light Award for founding ESTEEM INC., a nonprofit
serving the homeless. She also designed and developed curricula and
programs and conducted strategic planning for many nonprofits over the
course of her career.

A graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, Ms. Wiener attended Temple on
the Heights, now B’nai Jeshurun Congregation. She earned a Bachelor of Fine
Arts in Theater from Ohio University, a Master’s Degree in Humanities from
Florida State University, and a Master’s Degree in Non-Profit Organizations
from the Mandel Center at Case Western Reserve University. She was a
licensed social worker in Ohio.Ms. Wiener is survived by her son Alex;
former husband John Strekal; and sisters Natalie Karns and Leslie Nelson of
Chicago. Donations or contributions are suggested to the

which will be dedicated to the StageWrights Adult Writing Workshops
conducted at Ensemble since 1984, and continuing
in production as the Colombi New Plays Festival inaugurated in March, 2012.
Debra Wiener was a selfless and passionate
servant of the arts, and her devotion and energy will be sorely missed by
the Trustees and Staff of Ensemble Theatre.
