It was great to work with her at JFSA Cleveland. Sad news. She will be missed.

This is terribly sad news. I was Debra's Katherine in "A View From The Bridge" at Euclid Theatre back in 1988 and then did "A Lie of The Mind" there as well. Debra was a lovably quirky director and her passion for the work was a powerful force.
She always managed to pull together the best talent in the community for every duty from back stage to box office and the productions were as powerful as she was.
I owe her a great debt of gratitude for getting me back into the theatre community after 10 years away. God Bless You Debra. We were lucky to have known you.

Debra Joan Wiener, who worked in theater and the nonprofit sector for more than 25 years was 59. In Cleveland, Ms. Wiener was most recently a grant coordinator, strategic planner and fundraiser for Ensemble Theatre, where, in 2009, she organized an Ensemble benefit to honor Cleveland's premiere theatre couple Dorothy and Reuben Silver . She moved to the Virginia-Washington, D.C., area in 2010 to work in the nonprofit sector and expand her consulting globally.
Ms. Wiener’s involvement in theater included acting, singing, writing and directing. She began in theater with Cain Park, the JCC, Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, Euclid Theatre, and others. Her roles included starring as Susan B. Anthony in “If God Wanted Women” and as Stella in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and directing a production of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge.”
Ms. Wiener served community organizations as a grant writer and a volunteer, and she was a manager or executive director for six nonprofit boards, including The Tom Evert Dance Co. and The Repertory Project. The recipient of numerous awards, she was honored in 1991 with President Bush's national 655th Point of Light Award for founding ESTEEM INC., a nonprofit serving the homeless. She also designed and developed curricula and programs and conducted strategic planning for many nonprofits over the course of her career..
A graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, Ms. Wiener attended Temple on the Heights, now B’nai Jeshurun Congregation. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Ohio University, a Master’s Degree in Humanities from Florida State University, and a Master’s Degree in Non-Profit Organizations from the Mandel Center at Case Western Reserve University. She was a licensed social worker in Ohio.Ms. Wiener is survived by her son Alex; former husband John Strekal; and sisters Natalie Karns and Leslie Nelson of Chicago.
