THE STORY:
The play, which opened in May, 2000, is fundamentally a mystery about the authorship of a particularly important proof, a mystery that is solved in the end; it is also, however, about the unravelable enigma of genius, and the toll it can take on those who are beset with it, aspire to it or merely live in its vicinity.
On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness—or genius—will she inherit?

All auditions will be held at Lakeland Community College’sPerforming Arts Center (PAC). Sorry, no Equity contracts for this production. No need to prepare a monologue.  I will have you read directly from the script.  Additional auditions and callbacks only as necessary; ALL ROLES ARE COMPENSATED.

Production and Rehearsal dates:
Proof will open on Friday, September 28 (or perhaps September 21) and run through October 14, 2012--Friday through Sunday. Of course you will be compensated for all performances. Rehearsals will begin sometime in early to mid August. Don't worry, we will work around vacation schedules. In regards to rehearsals, you will not be called for rehearsal unless needed as this play is easily broken down into two-character scenes.

EACH CHARACTER IS  WONDERFUL AND COMPELLINGLY DRAWN. SURELY EACH OF THESE ROLES WILL BE CHALLENGING AND FUN TO PLAY. A VERY THEATRICAL PIECE.

The Roles:
Catherine:A young woman (mid to later twenties, maybe even early 30's depending upon the age of the  some of her father’s mathematical genius, and, she fears, his “instability” as well; she gave up life and schooling to care for her father until his recent death.
Claire: Catherine's older sister, (late twenties to mid to late 30's) a no nonsense, take charge, kind of gal who left Robert and Catherine behind in the run down family home on the edge of the Chicago University campus where Robert taught to make a life for herself in New York City.
Robert: A recently deceased mathematician who did brilliant, breakthrough, work in his youth, but whose later years were plagued by delusional mental illness; he is seen in Catherine's imagination and in flashbacks. Anywhere between the ages of mid to late 50’s to 75 years old.
Harold (Hal) Dobbs:One of Robert's last Ph.D. students during the one year his idol and mentor's illness went into remission, at least enabling Robert to teach, if not continue his own creative mathematical work. Hal is probably in hislate 20’s to mid 30’s.
The aforementioned roles are great and demand great actors!

… an exhilarating and assured new play by David Auburn that turns the esoteric world of higher mathematics literally into a back porch drama, one that is as accessible and compelling as a detective story.”   NY Times

" When we think of the great American playwrights, we think of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill and Lillian Hellman, in earlier generations; Wendy Wasserstein and Tony Kushner, Jon Robin Baitz and Donald Margulies today: They are always writing about big ideas and wrapping them in family squabbles that get us where we live. Welcome David Auburn to
the club. PROOF is the one you won't want to miss this fall." —NY Magazine.

"…combines elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre…[PROOF is a] smart and compassionate play of ideas." NY Daily News.

"PROOF surprises us with its aliveness…Mr. Auburn takes pleasure in knowledge…At the same time, he is unshowily fresh and humane, and he has written a lovely play." —NY Observer.

"[A] wonderfully funny…ambitiously constructed work…" —Variety.
