PLAYscape!: Etudes

The Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture/New World
Performance Lab and Heads Up Productions present July’s PLAYscape!
Workshop. This month’s family-friendly event explores the myth of
Pandora’s Box using performer generated etudes. The one-day only
workshop will be held at the Balch Street Theatre, 220 South Balch
Street in Akron, on July 28 from 2-4:30. The event is free, but
donations will be gratefully accepted.

Kyle Jozsa, Heads Up’s artistic director, will lead participants
through light physical training, culminating in the creation of
individual etudes* in response to the Pandora myth. This workshop is
designed to show actors how training can relate to work on a
production but is fun for actors and non-actors alike. Please come
prepared to move.

*An etude is a short study of a technical skill.

Kyle, who heads all of the company’s training, recently returned from
a summer intensive with the Massachusetts-based research company,
Double Edge Theatre. After a week-long workshop with Jerzy Grotowski’s
fromer lead actress, Rena Mirecka, Kyle was taught Double Edge’s
dramaturgical research methods of exploration through training. Having
recently devised pieces on Prometheus and The Green Man, Kyle works
with etudes as a means to further develop technique and imagination.

PLAYscape! is a new program sponsored by CATAC/NWPL at the company’s
Balch Street Theatre Space. On the last Saturday of each month, the
company will host a series of interactive theatre adventures,
landscapes, and escapes. Create puppets and masks. Learn about
storytelling and movement techniques. Explore yoga, history, science,
and current events. Come play with some of Akron’s most innovative
artists and discover the magic and mystery of theatre. This series of
community and family-oriented adventures promises to engage children
and adults of all ages.
