Play synopsis:

In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is
summoning The Rapture. Will, a disgraced Evangelical who has fled his rural
hometown, comes to the Hobby Lobby not only for employment, but also to
rekindle a relationship with Alex, his brooding teenage son whom he gave up
for adoption several years ago. He joins the ranks of the blue-vested
employees, a comedic set of misfits struggling to find their way. Samuel D.
Hunter’s dark but deeply empathetic comedy won the 2011 OBIE Award for
Playwriting and the 2011 Drama Desk Nomination for Best Play.

Characters: Three men (late 30s, mid 20s, late teens) and two women (late
20s, early 40s)

CHARACTERS

WILL – A disgraced Evangelical who has fled his rural hometown after a
scandal (and a great personal loss) caused the fall of his cult-like church.
He moves to Boise to connect with his son Alex, who he gave up for adoption
many years earlier. Quiet with a great inner frustration that bubbles to the
surface at times. Seems like everyman on the outside, with extreme religious
beliefs that he keeps hidden until provoked or probed. Late thirties.

PAULINE – The manager of the Hobby Lobby, a craft store in Boise, ID. A bit
manic, energetic, a bit of a control freak, and certainly obsessive about
her store’s operation. She takes great pride in her store and likely doesn’t
have much of a life outside of her work. Late thirties to early forties.

ANNA- Another Hobby Lobby employee/ loner who sneaks into the break room
after hours to read alone in the dark. Naïve, lonely, intellectually very
simple, and awkward- yet kind, compassionate. Late twenties to early
thirties.

LEROY- A college art student who works at Hobby Lobby and thrives on making
people feel uncomfortable in both his art and in his life (which are thinly
separated). Driven, passionate, loyal. Early to mid twenties.

ALEX- Leroy’s adopted younger brother, Will’s estranged son given up for
adoption, and a cashier at the Hobby Lobby. A loner, dealing with
depression. Intelligent, straightforward. Buries himself in avant-garde
modern classical music, his poetry, and performance art. 17 years old.

Production dates: Oct. 26-Nov. 18. Preview date October 25.

Rehearsals begin Sept. 20.

Audition: Sides provided.

AEA contracts: There are 1-2 AEA Contracts available for this production.
(AEA contracts are based on the Special Appearance Agreement). Non-AEA
Contracts will pay $450 each.
