KIRTLAND, Ohio – July 27, 2012 - Lakeland Community College will host a
free public reading by internationally acclaimed poet and Cleveland native
Marilyn Nelson Tuesday, October 16 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the Lakeland

event is in anticipation of Black Poetry Day October 17.

Nelson is known and regarded for her the emotions that she stirs and
brings to life through her writing. Drawing from African American history
and racism, she describes historical events and figures such as: George
Washington Carver (African American inventor, botanist and scientist at
Tuskegee), the Tuskegee Airmen, Emmitt Till and Prudence Crandall (founder
of the first school for African American girls in 1833). In addition to
writing poetry, she has also published numerous stories for children.

Her most recent book “The Freedom Business” (Front Street, 2008), deals
with Venture Smith, an African freed slave in America who published his
life story in 1798.

She is the author or translator of over a dozen books, many of which have
received awards such as the: Annisfield-Wolf Award; Boston Globe/ Hornbook
Award; Flora Stieglitz Straus Award; and the Coretta Scott King Honor.

In 1992, Marilyn Nelson’s book “The Homeplace” won the prestigious
Cleveland-based Annisfield-Wolf award that acknowledges outstanding
creative work dealing with racism.

Nelson was also honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes,
two creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts
and the Department of the Army's Commander's Award for Public Service.

Earlier this year, she received the 2012 Frost Medal for distinguished
lifetime achievement from the Poetry Society of America.

Nelson is a professor emerita of English at the University of Connecticut.
She was poet laureate of the State of Connecticut from 2001-2006.
