"A Chorus Line" Opens Tonight on the Straw Hat Theatre Stage

The musical for everyone who's ever had a dream and put it all on the line opens on the Straw Hat Theatre stage at the Ashtabula Arts Center on Friday, August 3. Winner of nine Tony Awards, including "Best Musical" and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, "A Chorus Line" is the longest-running American Broadway musical ever. Performances will be held August 3 - 5, 10 - 12, 16 - 18. All shows begin at 8 p.m.

Telling the tale of the emotional ambitions of the unsung heroes of the theater, the chorus dancers, "A Chorus Line" begins in an empty theater where casting for a new Broadway show is the chance of a lifetime. It's what they've worked for every day of their lives and it's their one chance to shine in the spotlight.

Straw Hat Theatre's live pit band will be directed by Debra Fleming and will play all the memorable musical numbers including: "I Can Do That," "At the Ballet," "One (Singular Sensation)" and the perennial favorite "What I Did for Love."

Conceived and originally directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett with book by James Kirkwood & Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban "A Chorus Line" will be directed by Stephen Rhodes of Conneaut.

Tickets are on sale now. Box office ticket prices are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Advance-sale, pre-paid tickets will receive a $2 discount per ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Ashtabula Arts Center box office or by phone at (440) 964-3396.

This production is not recommended for children and contains material that may offend some people.

The Ashtabula Arts Center is funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council.
