Fall Classes in the Arts Begin September 10th

 

The Ashtabula Arts Center will be starting their session of fall classes on September 10th. The Ashtabula Arts Center is a multi-arts facility offering classes and events in the areas of dance, music, theater and the visual arts.  Pre-registration and pre-payment are required for all classes and workshops.  Arts Center members receive a 10% discount on the class fee. Dance Classes


The cost of each dance classes is $65 for the session unless otherwise noted. 


Ballet IA 
Mondays, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.  
10 weeks beginning Sept. 10
Children with no prior experience will begin formal training in classical ballet at this level. Learn basic ballet vocabulary, proper body alignment and coordination. Musicality and creativity are developed.

Ballet III & IV 
 Mondays, 4:30 - 6 p..m.  
10 weeks beginning Sept. 10
Students will continue the study of the principles of classical ballet. Multiple turns, batteries and grand allegro steps will be introduced. Students will be expected to work with greater emphasis on discipline, exactness and precision in skills.

Beginning Lyrical Jazz 
Mondays, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. 
10 weeks, beginning Sept. 10 
for ages 8 and up
A fusion of ballet with jazz & contemporary dance techniques with an expressive quality. This class will help students learn to interpret music & express themselves through movement.

Advanced Pointe 

Mondays, 6 - 7 p.m. 
8 weeks beginning Sept. 10
$52 class fee/$46.80 member rate
The principles of pointe technique will be continued.

Beginning and Intermediate Ballroom Dance
Mondays, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

An upbeat and fun class that teaches numerous ballroom dances. Join the fun!

Pre-Ballet 
 for ages 5 - 7

Exploring a modified ballet technique. Basic ballet vocabulary, basic body alignment and rhythm will be introduced. Prerequisite: Creative Movement or coordinator's permission.

Ballet II 
Tuesdays, 5:15 - 6:45 p.m. 
10 weeks beginning Sept. 11
Stressing flexibility, strength and alignment, this class builds on the previous level of training. Designed for students who have had a full year or more of Ballet I.

Clara & the Nutcracker's Adventures Through Movement

Decorative One-Stroke Painting Workshops with Janet Regelman
Mondays, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. 
$20 class fee or $18 member rate per weekly workshop plus the listed materials fee
Based on the One-Stroke Painting method made popular by Donna Dewberry, each workshop completes a different project. All materials are provided. Once you've learned the technique, you can do lots of projects at home. Sign up for one workshop or all of them!

Beginning Pottery

This class will teach the basic techniques involved in the potter's wheel and hand building allowing time for practice & creativity. We will also experiment with combining elements. Students may focus in one area if they wish. 

Raku! 
for adults/teens
Mondays, 7:45 - 8:45 p.m. 
$60 class fee plus a $15 materials fee
6 weeks beginning September 10
Raku is a Japanese glaze firing technique that produces spectacular effects. This is an exciting hands-on process where finished clay pieces are placed in the kiln and heated quickly with a propane burner. The red-hot pottery is removed and placed in a container with combustible materials to smoke. After smoking, the pottery is cleaned and the glaze is revealed. Students will hand build both sculptural and functional pottery. The final classes will be held outside where students 
will fire their own work. 
 
Beginning/Intermediate Knitting 
for adults/teens 
Tuesdays, 1 - 2:30 p.m. 
 $50 class fee 
8 weeks beginning September 11
Learn the basics of knitting. Our first project will be a scarf. As students progress, Meeghan will coach them through a project of their own choosing. For the first class, bring 1 skein of worsted weight yarn (just ask at the store if you don't know what this is) and size 8 or 9 straight needles. Choose a smooth yarn as bumpy and eyelash yarns are difficult to learn with.

Animal Explorers 
for grades K-3
Tuesdays, 4 - 5 p.m. 
 $35 class fee 
for 8 weeks beginning September 11
See how famous artists have used animals in their work and explore working in the style of those artists. We will look at examples from ancient history, different countries and even modern art for inspiration. Students will use different types of materials and techniques. 

Art Explorers for grades 2-6
Tuesdays, 5 - 6 p.m. 
 $35 class fee 
8 weeks beginning September 11
We will use paints, pastels, markers, ink pen, watercolors and colored pencils in different combinations and may even do some sculpture. A class for kids who like to trying new things.

Drawing Dragons 
for ages 10 and up 
6:30 - 7:30 p.m. 
 8 weeks beginning September 11 
$40 class fee 
Learn dynamic drawing techniques with local artist/illustrator Ralph Bacon who created the dragon mural for the new Lakeside High School gym. Ralph will coach students through creating their own illustrations of dragons. Techniques such as shading and foreshortening will be used to bring the illustrations to life. 

Advanced Drawing 
for ages 15 & up
Tuesdays, 7:45-8:45 p.m. 
 8 weeks beginning September 11 
$50 class fee

Taught by Ralph Bacon who is a professional artist with three decades of experience, this class is for the student who already has a good basis in drawing skills and would like to expand their technique. Please bring samples of your drawings to the first class and be prepared to talk about what you would like to learn. Ralph will design lessons to address the interests of students. There will be weekly drawing assignments to complete between lessons. Students will work in graphite, pen, conte and charcoal. High school students should consider this class as an opportunity to build their portfolio. 

Beginning/Intermediate Stained Glass
for adults 
5:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Four Sessions: September 11(Monday) & Tuesdays, Sept. 17, 24 and Oct. 2
$75 class fee/$67.50 member rateplus a $75 materials fee
Students will be introduced to the copper foil method while completing a flat panel. Cut glass, fit the glass to a pattern, apply copper foil and solder. Students will choose from patterns provided by the teacher. The finished panel will measure approximately 7 1/2" x 10." Intermediate students will work on an alternate project at their level.

Drawing for the Young Artist 
for grades 1-3
Wednesdays, 4 - 4:45 p.m.

for 8 weeks beginning September 12
Designed for the young student who wants to try new things or for the student who needs a little help in building their self-confidence in drawing. Students will draw realistically but also explore a variety of materials to keep it fun. 

Basic Drawing for Children
 for grades 4-6 

Wednesdays, 5 - 6 p.m.

for 8 weeks beginning September 12
The focus is on "What do you see?" and "Draw what you see." Students will use a variety of drawing materials and be introduced to the "tricks of the trade" that professional artists use.

Cooking Class "Cocktail Party Fare"

Cocktail party fare with a flair will be the theme of the night! Join in the culinary fun as we "christen" the newly remodeled Arts Center kitchen! This class will feature preparation & tasting of food prepared by the instructor using professional technique, take-home recipe packets and demonstration of favorite kitchen tools & gadgets. The menu includes: Champagne Sparkle, Sangria Cordoba, Homemade Cheddar Crackers with Sun Dried Tomato Dip, Asparagus Blue-Cheese Roll-Ups and Artichoke Truffles.

Claytivity 
for grades 1-6
Thursdays, 6 -7 p.m. 
 $40 class fee plus a $5 materials fee

Learn the basic methods of hand building in clay. Students will get to use their own creative ideas. All the projects will be bisque fired and glazed to create permanent works of art. 

Clay Sculpture 
for adults/teens

The instructor will work with you to bring your ideas to life. The work produced in this class will be primarily decorative as opposed to functional.

Watercolor Techniques

Learn techniques that will enable you to work on your own subject matter outside of the classroom. Each class will include demonstrations of technique and time for students to paint. 

Drawing for Painters
for adults/teens 
Thursdays, 8 - 9 p.m. 
 $40 class fee

The success of a finished painting very much on the base drawing used. In this class, students will develop drawings skills to employ to create the design for original paintings. 

 Art for Homeschoolers 
grades 1 - 6: Fridays 10 - 11 a.m.
grades 7 - 12: Fridays 11 a.m. - noon
$5 per person per class
Classes are scheduled by the month and must be paid at the beginning of the month.
Drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media are included. Lessons include art vocabulary, principles of design and art history. Cross-curricular concepts will also be introduced.

 Mixed Media for Kids 
for ages 7 - 12
Saturdays, 9 - 10 a.m.

We will use paints, pastels, markers, ink pen, watercolors and colored pencils in all different combinations. The instructor will help you to learn more about these drawing and painting tools and how to be better able to combine them into interesting works of art. 

Oil Painting 
for adults/teens
Saturdays, 10 a.m. - noon 
$50 class fee

8 weeks beginning September 15 
This is a beginning course that will teach the "A to Z's" of oil painting. Along with demonstrations of techniques, you will be encouraged to learn to choose a good composition before you begin a painting and learn to paint what you see.A materials list is available however; the instructor prefers that you wait to purchase materials until after she reviews them at the first class. If you already have supplies, bring them to the first class session.

 

Theater Classes

 

Storybook Stagecraft for grades 1 - 6
Tuesdays, 6 - 7 p.m.

Focusing on a classic children's story, students learn the basics of acting -- stage delivery, diction and projection, emotion, pantomime, focus, and blocking. At the final class, students will present a performance of the story as readers' theater for family & friends. 

 

Acting Without Words
for all ages

One of the key ingredients in the recipe of acting is understanding how to incorporate your body and facial expressions. This class is a perfect mix of movement, expression, & physicality, all put together without using words! Perfect for beginning actors and dancers who want to learn some acting basics and as well as how to incorporate them in performance situations. 

Acting Intensive 
for ages 11 and up

Do you love acting and want to learn more? We will help you find new monologues for auditions, let you work on scenes with other actors and tweak your technique! Learn about different theater genres. This is the perfect class for the aspiring actor!

Preschool Drama 
Thursdays, 9:30 - 10:10 a.m.

Your preschooler will learn to act out different animals, emotions and activities. This class will be based around movement, working with others to tell a story and just having fun with acting. 

Preschool Art Expression
Thursdays, 10:15 - 10:45 p.m. 
 5 weeks beginning Sept. 13th
We will create with paint, paper, scissors, glue and lots of other fun materials. Students will learn to relate projects to a story or idea. They will receive instruction in the proper use and care of materials and be encouraged to develop confidence through doing. Dress for a mess!

Music for Tots 
Thursdays, 10:50 - 11:20 a.m. 
 5 weeks beginning Sept. 13th
As a start for a lifelong love of music, children will sing folk and traditional songs, play musical games, learn about the structures of music through movement, and perform on simple instruments developing listening, social and pre-reading skills.
