*Directed by DAVID MALINOWSKI*
The first play of Chagrin Valley Little Theatre's 83rd Season, Yasmina
Reza's Tony-winning GOD OF CARNAGE, opens on September 28. Originally
written in French and translated by Christopher Hampton, GOD OF CARNAGE
is a non-stop, high-strung comedy that examines the savage underside of
seemingly civilized adults. Director David Malinowski brings this
piercingly uproarious play to the CVLT main stage.
Prior to the events of the play, Benjamin Raleigh and Henry Novak, two
11-year old boys, have had a playground fight that resulted in Henry
losing a tooth. As the play begins, Benjamin's parents, Alan (David
Malinowski / Matt Mortensen) and Annette (Evie Koh), are visiting the
apartment of Henry's parents, Michael and Veronica (Mark DePompei and
Dawn Hill) for a civil discussion about how to handle the situation.
This well-intentioned meeting turns prickly as the gloves come off and
the alcohol comes out, and peaceful discussion swiftly degenerates into
arguments that spiral off into topics of misogyny, racial prejudice and
homophobia. In short order, the insults are flying, spouses are turning
against each other, and the unglued foursome expose their worst selves
in a hilarious mixture of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and classic
farce.
GOD OF CARNAGE took home the Tony Award for Best Play and became
Broadway's third-longest running play of the past decade (after The 39
Steps and August: Osage County). Roman Polanski directed the 2011 film
adaptation, entitled "Carnage", which featuring Jodie Foster, John C.
Reilly, Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet. Tickets for GOD OF CARNAGE are
$16 regular, $12 for students and seniors. The play is recommended for
adult audiences due to mature language. Performances are Fridays and
Saturdays at 8 PM, September 28 - October 20.
Tickets are available by phone at 440-247-8955, Monday through Saturday
from 1-6 PM and on the theatre's website at CVLT.org around the clock.
