Lakeland hosts free staged reading of "The Dogs of Pripyat" Nov. 4,
presented by the Interplay Jewish Theatre

In 1986, the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl forced the residents of nearby
Pripyat to leave their beloved pets behind. Dogs barked and ran after the
buses for miles while their family members wept helplessly as they looked
out from bus windows. Playright Leah Napolin imagined how her own dog
might have dealt with such a catastrophe and wrote a groundbreaking play
about bonding and survival called “The Dogs of Pripyat.”

A staged reading of “The Dogs of Pripyat” is slated for Sunday, Nov. 4 at
2 p.m. in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center, 7700
Clocktower Dr., Kirtland, 44094 (I-90 & Rt. 306 Exit). Admission and
parking is free an open to the public. However, donations in any amount
will be gratefully accepted to help cover the costs of the next reading in
early 2013.

“The Dogs of Pripyat” was honored in 2004 with the prestigious John
Gassner Memorial Playwriting Award and it has since been adapted for the
musical theatre. Napolin’s post-show discussion will include some of the
musical numbers from that version.

Lakeland Civic Theatre Director Martin Friedman directs a stellar cast:
John Busser, Aimee Collier, Liz Conway, Aaron Elersich, Mitchell Fields*,
Carly Germany*, Trey Gilpin, Stuart Hoffman, Jeremy Jenkins, Annie
Kitral*, Diane Mull, and Daniel Simpson (*denotes members of Actors Equity
Association).

Napolin is best known for writing “Yentl,” her stage adaptation of the
short story by Isaac B. Singer. It ran on Broadway in 1975 and was
subsequently made into a Hollywood film in 1983 that was directed by and
starred Barbra Streisand.

She has also written several other plays, including: “Lost Island;” “Trash
and Treasures” (commissioned by the Actors Theatre of Louisville); and
“Aristophanes' Retreat.”
