* **ABOUT THE PLAY*

Ibsen's classic *Hedda Gabler *is known as the women’s *Hamlet, *one of the
most controversial, elusive women in the history of the theatre. A dancing
debutante who grew up in a military barrack, Hedda rides horses and shoots
pistols… and then the play’s events unfold and demand of her an heroic
struggle. Theatre historian Susan Torrey Barstow has documented that one
woman among the play’s first audiences of the 1890s recognized that
struggle and noted, “*Hedda is all of us*.” Audiences must have continued
to identify with her struggle, as by 1911 “*over forty thousand women
marched through London demanding the right to vote. The most popular
contingent in the procession, the Actresses Franchise League, was led by a
woman on horseback. She was dressed as Hedda Gabler*.” Hedda’s struggle and
the legacy of General Gabler’s daughter is still marching among us today;
the play had two major New York productions in the last six years, and two
more major productions just completed their runs in the last two months in
London at the Old Vic and at the Shaw Festival in Canada.

*ABOUT THE ACADEMY*

The Academy for the Performing Arts is an accredited, half day program.
Admission is by audition from a group of nine northeast Ohio school systems
that include *Aurora, Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, Mayfield, Orange, Richmond
Heights, Solon, South Euclid-Lyndhurst and West Geauga. *The Academy is
housed within the Chagrin Falls Performing Arts Center and uses its
auditorium once annually for an opening musical with unique investment of
resources. The season also uses the renovated Studio Theatre and several
classroom spaces, collaborating with high school faculty, students,
administrators, and area professionals on a regular basis. The mission of
the Academy is to provide talented high school juniors and seniors with a
joyful, challenging and inspiring training experience in the performing
arts; one that builds confidence, courage and mastery in creative
self-expression and prepares students for advanced college and professional
opportunities. 2012-2013 marks the fifth year of the program, which has
grown to great acclaim.
