About the play
With Tony Award-winning music by Tom Kitt and a book and lyrics by Brian
Yorkey, “Next to Normal” concerns a mother who struggles with a worsening
bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The
musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug
abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry and suburban life. According to the
Pulitzer Board, “Next to Normal” is a “powerful rock musical that grapples
with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject
matter for musicals.”

The Lakeland Civic Theatre’s production features Aimee Collier as Diana,
Emma Wahl as Natalie, Rick McGuigan as Dan, Trey Gilpin as the doctor, Ben
Donahoo as Gabe, and Patrick Miller as Henry.
