The Porthouse Theatre 2013 Season Auditions Begin in February

Kent, OH—Porthouse Theatre will hold auditions in Cleveland at Playhouse Square and at Kent State University for the 2013 season in late February.   The 2013 season will include South Pacific, Working and Fiddler on the Roof.

Auditions will be held in two locations.  On Mon., Feb. 25th at Playhouse Square from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. in Green Hall.  Green Hall is accessible through the State Theatre stage door, 1650 Chester Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114.

Auditions at Kent State University in the Music & Speech Center in D205 Acting Studio will be on Tues., Feb. 26 and Wed., Feb. 27 from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m   The Music & Speech Center is located at 1325 Theatre Drive on the corner of Horning Rd. & Main St. in Kent, OH 44242.

Auditions are by appointment only and can be scheduled after Jan. 14, 2013 by calling 330-672-3884<file://localhost/tel/330-672-3884> or emailing porthouse at kent.edu<mailto:porthouse at kent.edu>.  Indicate the location (Cleveland or Kent), a first and second choice of time slot, and a contact phone number. Please speak slowly and clearly when leaving a message.

Those auditioning for the 2013 season should prepare two selections of 16 bars, one ballad and one up-tempo song.  Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key for the accompanist provided.  Acappella singing will not be permitted.

Please be aware the roles of Nellie Forbush and Emile in South Pacific have been cast.

Callbacks will be on Sat., March 2, 2013, time TBD.  Those being considered for all three shows will be asked to attend an additional callback on Sun., March 3, time TBA.  On Sat. March 2, there will be a dance call, singing and reading for individual parts.  Callbacks will be held at Kent State University in the Music and Speech Center. Actors must be able to attend callbacks to be considered for a part.

South Pacific, directed by artistic director Terri Kent, is a Broadway musical set on a tropical island during World War II, which tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. The beloved score’s songs include “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “This Nearly Was Mine” and “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” Music is by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. This musical is based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific and runs June 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m. and June 16 and 23 at 2 p.m.

The second production is Working, based on the book by Studs Terkel and adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, this new 2010 version of WORKING is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. While most of the professions have been updated, the strength of the show is in the core truths that transcend specific professions; the key is how people’s relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. Directed by Jim Weaver this show runs July 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and July 7 and 14 at 2 p.m.

The season closes with Fiddler on the Roof ; directed by Eric Van Baars, associate artistic director for Porthouse Theatre. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof and has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Book by Joseph Stein ,Music by  Jerry Bock , Lyrics by  Sheldon Harnick. Based on Sholem Aleichem's stories by special permission of Arnold Perl. The show will run July 25, 26, 27, 30, 31 at 8 p.m., Aug. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, at 8 p.m. and July 28 and Aug. 4, 10, 11 at 2 p.m.
