ABOUT THE PLAY
Spies, espionage, mysterious women and deadly men take center stage in this boisterous comedy/mystery and Broadway hit. A loving tribute and entertaining spin-off of the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock, The 39 Steps follows hapless hero Richard Hannay as he finds himself thrust into a dangerous adventure. He stumbles upon a plot to smuggle top-secret information out of the country to aid England’s enemies. Four actors (three men and one woman who play dozens of different roles) and creative staging provide audiences with marvelous fun as Patrick Barlow’s adaptation pays homage (through a loving spoof) of Hitchcock’s masterpiece.

• Cool facts about this show: Although The 39 Steps uses key plot points and characters from Alfred Hitchcock’s film, the play is definitely a more satirical “send up” of the story (ala Monty Python) and incorporates characters and music from other Hitchcock films. The play’s original concept as developed by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon was for two actors to play all the parts. Playwright Patrick Barlow then tweaked that concept for four people, and the four-person version was first presented in 2005 at the West Yorkshire (England) Playhouse. About a year later, the production opened in London. The show had its Broadway premiere in 2008 and ran for two years before transferring
