Writing & Performance Workshop with Paige Hernandez
March 5, 2013
6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
About the workshop:
Teens (ages 14-19) are invited to this free writing & performance workshop led by Paige Hernandez. In this 90 minute writing and performance workshop, students will work with Paige to interpret the structure of slam poetry, compose and evaluate written work, apply techniques to express themselves through performance and share their work with other students in a supportive atmosphere.


Students will:
*         Develop a concept, produce written work and apply a wide range of strategies to interpret, evaluate written work.
*         Discover how the intention of gestures adds a deeper meaning to telling a story to a live audience.
*         Integrate verbal and non-verbal communication to produce a cohesive piece of work with impact and purpose.
*         Take risks, engage in literate behaviors and participate in a creative, reflective community.


About Paige:
Paige Hernandez (writer, choreographer, and performer) is a graduate of the Baltimore School for the Arts and received a BA in theater and broadcast journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.

As a teaching artist, Paige has taught throughout the U.S .to all ages, in all art disciplines. She has partnered with many organizations including Wolftrap and Arena Stage where she was awarded the Thomas Fichandler award for exceptional promise in theater education.

Paige has performed on many stages throughout the US, including Arena Stage, Roundhouse, The Everyman Theatre, The Kennedy Center, Imagination Stage, Fulton Theatre, Ohio Theatre, Manship Theatre as well as others.

As a critically acclaimed b-girl, Paige's choreography has been seen all over the country and recently in The Kennedy Center's Knuffle Bunny and American Scrapbook.

As a hip hop education advocate, Paige has shaped various educational workshops, including Props for Hip Hop at Arena Stage and Keep it Moving, at Wolftrap. Both workshops help teachers to understand the fundamentals of hip hop while incorporating the culture into their curriculum.

As a performer and playwright, Paige has performed her children's show Havana Hop in elementary schools along the East Coast. She is currently touring her one woman show, Paige in Full: A B-girl's Visual Mixtape.
