*Director, Michael Dempsey*

*

*Alaura Kingsley/Carla Haywood* (mezzo/soprano, 25-early 40s): Alaura is
the ultimate femme fatale; dressed in white with legs that go on forever,
she shows up in Stone’s office and turns his world upside down. She’ll kiss
you as soon as kill you. Carla is the movie star who “plays” her, and is
also wife to producer Buddy. A real "acting" role. She sings one comic
duet with the detective, and a few other minor musical sections.

*Female jazz singer* (alto) is member of The Angel City Four: a vocal jazz
quartet, SATB, who serve as Greek chorus, “street people”, Hollywood
characters, etc. They do some scat singing a la Manhattan Transfer. Must
have a strong musical experience/training, ability to quickly learn
difficult parts, hold your own part in dissonant chords, etc. Four songs
and several variations.

*THE SHOW*

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score,
CITY OF ANGELS is a swinging, sexy, smart, and hilarious musical comedy.

Set in the glamorous, seductive Hollywood of the 40's, the world of film
studios and flimsy negligees, the show tells the side-by-sides stories
about the "real world" misadventures of Stine, a novelist attempting to
adapt one of his books to the screen, and the "reel" world adventures of
Stine, his hardboiled gumshoe hero, trying to solve a mystery in the
fictional world of the film. One features romance and Hollywood craziness,
while the other is a film noir netherworld with vicious thugs and femmes
fatales. CITY OF ANGELS is the rarest of musical comedies: intricate lyrics
filled with puns and crackling rhymes, a sizzling jazz score, and a script
that couples sidesplitting comedy with noir intensity. Music is by
Hollywood musical grand master Cy Coleman (THE LIFE, SWEET CHARITY, BARNUM,
THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES) It features a hilarious book by Larry Gelbart (A
FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE FORUM).
