Stephen Sondheim is undeniably one of the most important figures in
American musical theater. In a career spanning nearly fifty years, he
has been the recipient of eight Tony Awards, multiple Grammy Awards, the
Laurence Olivier Award, an Academy Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre's spring musical, PUTTING IT TOGETHER,
which opens on March 22 and runs weekends through April 20, combines
songs from some of Sondheim's best scores into an unusual musical revue.
As may be expected of any work by Sondheim, PUTTING IT TOGETHER is
smart, sophisticated, dry humored, and anything but typical. Unlike most
musical revues, which simply trot out the hits, Sondheim uses PUTTING IT
TOGETHER to wrap his old songs in a new context. A Manhattan anniversary
party serves as the setting, as a cast of five sing more than thirty
songs that reflect their lives and loves. The show pulls together
material from some of Sondheim's most beloved works, including /Sunday
in the Park with George/, /Assassins/, /Company/, /Merrily We Roll
Along/, /A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum/, /A Little
Night Music/, /Sweeney Todd/ and others. Some of the songs will be
familiar, and others not so familiar; particularly those which were cut
from their original shows and make their first appearances in this score.
