Tornado watch or warning?
‘SKYWARN’ trains spotters April 2
KIRTLAND, Ohio – March 26, 2013 – According to the National Weather
Service’s Storm Prediction Center, about 1,000 tornados strike the United
States each year.
Just in time for the start of tornado season, the Emergency Management
Planning Program at Lakeland Community College will host “ SKYWARN,” a
free training seminar on proper recognition and reporting of severe
weather conditions on Tuesday, April 2 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on the
college campus, 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, 44094, in building T,
room 129.
An instructor from the National Weather Service of Cleveland will be
presenting the program.
The event is an opportunity for firefighters, police officers, school bus
drivers, emergency managers and ham radio operators to be trained to spot
and report severe weather conditions. The program is open to the public.
“Weather radars can’t detect a funnel cloud touching down,” said Lee
Silvi, Emergency Management Planning program director at Lakeland. “Human
eyes are needed to see it on the ground.”
This is the eleventh year Lakeland Community College is the county host
for the program. Individuals who complete the training may be assigned a
spotter identification number and a phone number to officially report
severe weather conditions.
Reservations are not accepted. Seating is first-come, first-served.
For more information call 440-525-7252.
