Musical Theatre Audition Workshop
Instructor: Jackson Sturkey, New York Film Academy's Musical Theatre Conservatory
Pianist:  Sharon Alberson, M.M.

This workshop will focus on the auditioning for musicals; specifically, forming an audition book, audition room etiquette, knowing your type and acting through song.  Participants should memorize one musical theatre song, and plan to sing 16 to 32 bars (approximately 30 seconds to one minute of music).  Bring your sheet music in the appropriate key, an accompanist will be provided.  You may also choose to audit the workshop.

Jackson Sturkey is a graduate of the New York Film Academy's One Year Musical Theatre Conservatory. He works locally as an actor and singer with Weathervane Playhouse, and Faith in Action Musicals. He was most recently seen on stage as the Narrator in Weathervane Playhouse's production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" and "Tuning in" at the University of Akron. He recently worked with Barry Shapiro and won an award for his commercial work at the 2010 Arts Expo.

Sharon Alberson is a graduate of Kent State University School of Music and was a Blossom Music Scholar with the Cleveland Orchestra. A graduate of the University of Akron School of Law, Harvard Divinity School and Oxford University, Sharon is also a lawyer, minister and the founder of Faith Musicals. Sharon has been the Musical Director for the 2009, 2011 & 2012 productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Seussical the Musical, Cinderella and ANNIE at Weathervane.  This Spring, she is the Musical Director for Weathervane's production of The Music Man.

Meisner Scene Study through Classic American Drama

Instructor: Aubrey Caldwell, AEA

 

The object of this course is to realize and understand that acting is, "living truthfully under imaginary circumstances. This course will consist of a series of improvisational based exercises that allow the actor's instrument of imagination, instinct and emotion to be freely engaged. This course is designed to develop an understanding of basic acting techniques through the Sanford Meisner method as well as an in depth analysis and performance of a scene from a contemporary American play such as Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and William Inge. The fundamentals of this course will provide a solid foundation so that the actor is able to utilize these skills in a performance.

 

Course Objectives:

A. Develop and sharpen attention, focus and confidence.

B. Engaging in the other actor through listening and responding.

C. Stimulate the actor's imagination towards SPECIFIC and BOLD choices.

D. Recognizing and acting upon the truth of the moment.

E. Utilizing a theatrical language of terms.

F. Creating imaginary relationships and activities.

G. Developing a point of view.

H. Understanding physical actions.

I. Being able to analyze a scene or script.

J. Applying these steps to scripted material.

 

Aubrey Caldwell has a B.A. in Theatre and Music from Ashland University, and a M.F.A. in Acting from the Asolo Conservatory, Florida State University. studying with Jim Wise, Brant Pope, Ruby Allen and Scott Hayes. She has also studied with Broadway Vocal Coach, David Brunetti; former LAMDA and Julliard professor, Norman Ayrton; Producer, Pedagogue and O'Neill pioneer, Jose Quintero; and London's Globe Theatre Educational Director, Patrick Spottiswoode. Theatre credits include The "Witch" from Into the Woods, "Carol" from Oleanna, "Desdemona" from Shakespeare's Othello and "Suzanne" from Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile to name a few. In 2000, Aubrey moved to Los Angeles, where she appeared in independent films such as Monsieur Renaud and The Truth About Monkeys. In Austin, Texas she taught for TexARTS Academy in Lakeway, including Acting for the Camera, Acting for Stage and Acting for Musical Theatre. Aubrey has recently moved back to Ohio to teach Voice & Diction and Acting at The University of Akron and is fronting a new band called Buckle Down Band. She is also currently appearing at Actors' Summit Theater as a company member for the 2011-2012 season. Aubrey is a member of Actors' Equity Association and is Screen Actors' Guild eligible.
