Below is the IRS explanation on job search expenses. If you are already an actor, then you have a chance to deduct. If not, then probably not.

              Gregory J. Lavelle actor/attorney at law (440) 724-4538.

Job Search Expenses Can be Tax Deductible

Here are seven things the IRS wants you to know about deducting costs related to your job search:

To qualify for a deduction, your expenses must be spent on a job search in your current occupation. You may not deduct expenses you incur while looking for a job in a new occupation.

You can deduct employment and outplacement agency fees you pay while looking for a job in your present occupation. If your employer pays you back in a later year for employment agency fees, you must include the amount you received in your gross income, up to the amount of your tax benefit in the earlier year.

You can deduct amounts you spend for preparing and mailing copies of your résumé to prospective employers as long as you are looking for a new job in your present occupation.

If you travel to look for a new job in your present occupation, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area to which you travelled. You can only deduct the travel expenses if the trip is primarily to look for a new job. The amount of time you spend on personal activity unrelated to your job search compared to the amount of time you spend looking for work is important in determining whether the trip is primarily personal or is primarily to look for a new job.

You cannot deduct your job search expenses if there was a substantial break between the end of your last job and the time you begin looking for a new one.

You cannot deduct job search expenses if you are looking for a job for the first time.

In order to be deductible, the amount that you spend for job search expenses, combined with other miscellaneous expenses, must exceed a certain threshold. To determine your deduction, use Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. Job search expenses are claimed as a miscellaneous itemized deduction. The amount of your miscellaneous deduction that exceeds two percent of your adjusted gross income is deductible.

For more information about job search expenses, see IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions. This publication is available on IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Like, Jean, I urge you to be very careful if you decide to look into this "Opportunity." Please don't shell out upwards of $3500-5000. to participate, only to discover you don't usually end up with real jobs, as a result. Again, like Jean, I urge you to check out all the local acting, vocal, dancing, monologue, play writing, etc. private coaching, training, workshops, and / or learning the "trade" by going on local auditions and getting "OJT" when actually cast in a stage play, commercial and / or film. This "Opportunity" seems to be similar to the IMTA Competition (don't know if it still exists) which many local 'stars-in-their-eyes' actors have had the experience of ending up with negative results in advancing their career dreams. If you do choose to participate and pay the associated fees, be sure to check with your tax preparer to see if / how you might be able to declare the costs as possible business expenses.

Check out Neopal for the various listings re: the coaching, classes, etc. which local professionals offer at affordable fees.

Thanks . . .

I would caution anyone about seeing this as an opportunity.
I have a few friends who have been to one of Kim Myers "opportunities", only to discover that the next step is shelling out $3500 for the "...unique opportunity to perform on stage for five days, in front of the industries TOP AGENTS and CASTINGS!"
And that's just the fee you pay before your travel and lodging costs.
Companies like these make lots of money preying on eager, naive parents and their children.
While they may have some distance, remote connection with the success of some children, I'd want some solid proof of that "fact" before I'd pay a dime.
Spend your money on proper training with reputable, known arts institutions and instructors, and if you're lucky, for trips to larger cities when given the opportunity to meet with reputable agents and casting directors - but, as a 30 year veteran in this business, I caution you to never pay an entrance fee for 5 day auditions that will most certainly amount to nothing.
