WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Join Ana Paula Jones, Brazilian performer and resident Cleveland Foundation-Creative Fusion artist, as she shares cultural traditions of her homeland, principally the Brazilian regions of Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon, Alagoas and Maranhao. Through music, dance, song and storytelling, Ana Paula will expose workshop participants to traditional techniques that serve as tools for the performing artist. This is a fast-paced, organic, joyful workshop and is open to performers and nonperformers who are eager to share and celebrate the mind, body and spirit!

ANA PAULA JONES is the Director President of Raízes da Tradição Institute (Roots of Tradition Institute) in Rio de Janeiro Brazil and is a researcher of Brazilian traditions since 1998. Through the Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion Program, Ana Paula is in residence at Cleveland Public Theatre through the end of June of 2013. She is an actor, dancer, teacher, researcher and cultural producer. For the past 17 years, she has studied with Traditional Masters in diverse regions of the Brazil Africa, Europe and North, Central and Latin America. In 2000, she founded Raizes da Tradição to preserve, to protect, and to share the traditions of her homeland. In prior visits to Cleveland, she worked with Theater Labyrinth (Raymond Bobgan - Warbling Carrousel) in 1996, "Project Coup the Theater" (Massoud Saidpour - Come and See a Brief Chronology of the Human Race) in 1997, and from 2005 up to 2008, Ana Paula participated in the Parade The Circle celebration with Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1998, Ana Paula participated in workshops in Pontedera, Italy at Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards.

RAÍZES DA TRADIÇÃO: NEWS PARADIGMS FOR INCLUSION
The belief in traditional culture as a source of (in)formation for Brazilian artists, and as a primary material for universal artistic creation, forms the foundation for all Raízes da Tradição (Roots of Tradition) actions. A multidisciplinary center formed in 1998, that works towards researching, cataloging, acknowledging, circulating, and valorizing the various living expressions of cultural identity and the full spectrum of cultural diversity including; performing arts, traditional knowledge, intangible heritage and indigenous cultures. Raizes da Tradição works to build new approaches for the examination of the various meanings of art in contemporary and traditional societies. The conceptual matrix of our work focuses on lived experience, field research, the distinctions between global homogenization and the living expression of the people´s cultures. The achievements of The National Seminary for Living Cultural Expressions are the culmination of a continuing strategic plan to disseminate living cultural expressions, in order to investigate and support those cultures which are unknown to the majority of the Brazilian people, as part of a country which still lacks knowledge about itself. Reflecting the creative multiplicity of the country, the seminary helps to give form to, what has been globally conceived as, cultural diversity. This sets the stage for a solid initial step by governments, cultural professionals and civil society, for dialogue and deep reflection on the values of diverse identities and an acknowledgement of their importance. We must thank all the artists and traditional masters who contribute to our on-going work as well as all those in the Raizes da Tradição family. Together we are able to continue working for change.
