CVLT takes a comic view of society's obsession with appearances in
"Skin Deep"
CHAGRIN FALLS, OH - When Jon Lonoff's comedy SKIN DEEP premiered in New
York ten years ago, one reviewer said "in a country obsessed with
weight, plastic surgery, dating and infidelity, it's little wonder that
a playwright has come along to tackle all of these subjects in a
satirical comedy... delighting the audience with every one-liner." The
country's obsessions certainly haven't changed much since then, and
Lonoff's comedy, which opens at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre on May 31
for a four-weekend run, is still every bit as insightful and witty.
The plot centers on the insecure Maureen Mulligan (Jenny Barrett), who
has has holed herself up in her Queens apartment, hiding herself away in
a bathrobe behind a wall of self-deprecating humor. Sheila (Jaqueline
Hummel), Maureen's married, manipulative, self-absorbed sister, sets her
up on a blind date with sweet, awkward Joe Spinelli (Tim Walsh). Into
this mix drops Sheila's handsome husband, Squire (Bobby Thomas), the
quintessential understanding and supportive husband, who has an eye for
the ladies.
Under the direction of CVLT veteran Barbara L. Rhoades, Jon Lonoff's
play allows the audience to relate to the issues of body image, mid-life
crisis, and middle-aged dating, while giving a hearty and poignant laugh
at how these topics have become ingrained in our consciousness.
Tickets to SKIN DEEP, which runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, May 31 -
June 22 are $16 regular, $12 for students and seniors. Tickets can be
purchased in advance at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre's website -
www.CVLT.org, or by phone at 440-247-8955 between 1-6 PM, Monday through
Saturday. Tickets are also available at the door, although reservations
are suggested. The play is not recommended for children due to mature
themes.
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre is located at 40 River Street in historic
Chagrin Falls Village. CVLT is generously funded by Cuyahoga County
residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and supported by the Ohio
Arts Council.
