Ma’Sue will have their last open auditions for their upcoming show *O
Patria Mia *this Thursday. Actors will need to be prepared to do a cold
reading and memorization of a one minute monologue would be preferred.

O Patria Mia chronicles Red (Roger La Pierre Freeman-Harris), who is in
the final stage of the AIDS virus in 1992. Red has made the controversial
choice to end his AZT treatment, and to die naturally of the virus rather
than living with the debilitating side effects of the medication. His
devastated family is forced to deal with the convoluted nature of what it
means to please oneself while simultaneously attempting to uphold their
family values.

The family is an African American upper middle class. The family includes:

Casting Needed:

“Red” – mid-30s, professor, is dying from AIDS. Even though he is
physically weak, he still holds poise in his talk, and his essence is a
mixture of masculinity and feminine ways.

Kelly – is in her 30s, and the younger sister of Red. She is married to a
man of a lower class and different race. She cares for Red as he grows
weaker.

Janis- the mother, has a presence of being controlling and playing the
victims. She is in her 50s, and is tired of trying for too long to masked
problems within the family.

Craig- is in his 20s, and a dropout from college. Mixed in the wrong crowd,
he ends up on drugs.

Walter- the father of the family, and has the least amount of contact.

The caretaker is not race or age specific but helps guide the story along.
She is HIV positive as well.
