Quintessential American Musical Comedy

“The Music Man” Marches in to Close Out Weathervane Playhouse’s 78th Season

Tony Award-Winning Musical Spins Heart-Warming Tale of Family,

Love and Redemption in Early 20th Century America

Strike up the band! Weathervane Playhouse closes out its 78th season with the quintessential American musical comedy, The Music Man – Meredith Willson’s Tony Award-winning and heart-warming celebration of family, love, redemption, and the possibility of miracles. See it live on stage from June 6 to 30, 2013.

The Music Man tells the story of Professor Harold Hill and his impact on the sleepy town of River City, Iowa. Hill arrives in that small community on July 4, 1912, with every intention of fleecing the town’s citizens. But even with nothing but the lowest of intentions, he inadvertently brings joy into their lives – and into his own life as well.

His “con” is simple but effective: He convinces the town’s residents that he can teach their children to play in a marching band – but only if they first buy the instruments and uniforms he’s selling. Then, he plans to simply collect the money and escape without fulfilling his promises!

Hill’s best-laid plans, however, go wonderfully awry when he falls in love with the town librarian, Marian Paroo, who just might make an honest man of the perennial huckster.
Trapped by his own love for Marian, Hill is literally forced to face the music when he is made to “conduct” his rag-tag orchestra. While the children can hardly play their instruments, it’s the inner music that Hill and the band bring into the life of the town that miraculously transforms River City.

With a score packed with wonderfully unforgettable songs – including “76 Trombones,” “Gary, Indiana,” “Goodnight, My Someone” and “Shipoopi” – The Music Man serves up a loving, humorous celebration of the lost innocence of America at the beginning of the 20th century.

Weathervane Playhouse’s production of The Music Man is directed and choreographed by Sarah Elaine Bailey with musical direction by Sharon Dobbins Alberson. The production is proudly sponsored by FirstEnergy.
