[NEohioPAL] Theater Design and Tech Intro Classes offered at the Medina Performing Arts Center

The Medina County Arts Foundation is offering Theater Design and Theater Tech intro classes as part of the Fred Hargrove Young Artists Program at the Medina Performing Arts Center (PAC). The classes are available June 17-28 from 12-5p. As part of the program, students will assist the Hargrove tech team in the set/lighting preparation of the upcoming PAC production, "Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr."
Highlights from each class are:
Introduction to Technical Theatre - June 17-21
Study the different technical areas and construction techniques. Introduction to shop tools, computer drafting, and technical theatre processes. Learn how to construct and paint a theatrical flat.
Monday – technical elements, safety in the shop, tools, flat & terms, scales, computer-drafting techniques & terms, light plots, scenery drawings.
Tuesday – Build, cover and base paint a flat, discussion of flat and 3D construction
Wednesday – Demonstration and step-by-step painting process of bricks and sky using paint, brushes, and sponges
Thursday – Demonstration and step-by-step painting process of grass and objects. Adding highlight and shadow
Friday – Construction of fake bamboo, and prop fish to be used in The Little Mermaid production.
Designing for the Theatre – June 24-28
Introduces the students to the different aspects of theatre design, roles of designers on a production team, basic principles and elements of the design process. Participants will pick music to use as their theme for week.
Monday – Main design roles & elements of design, Lego design project, free drawing. Will work with pastels on paper.
Tuesday – Scenery, create a backdrop for dance from music, pastel rendering. Will work with pastel, paper, brushes and fixative.
Wednesday – Costumes, Historical silhouette, fabrics, colors, textures. Create clothing paper doll style, and color sketches. Will work with fabrics, historical fashion pictures, and period costume pictures, and renderings.
Thursday – Lighting –watch videos of lighting examples - American Idol, Rent, etc. Create a lighting morgue using pictures from magazines; learn about angles of light reinforced by the music. Creating sketches and renderings of a lighting design.
Friday – Finish presentation/clean up drawings. Discuss developing a concept and working with other designers in the collaborative process and presenting your ideas to a director.
Cost for each class is $150.00.
