Inscribed by UNESCO in 2009 on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, ca trù is a music like no other. Beguiling and intimate, this centuries-old poetic singing tradition, whose lyrics comprise some of Vietnam's finest literature, immerses the listener in an intoxicating world of images and sounds from times past. Never before performed in public in Ohio and exceedingly rare even in Vietnam, don't miss this chance to hear ca trù music in the sonorous acoustics of Shaker Heights, Ohio's First Unitarian Church of Cleveland.

Phạm Thị Huệ is a graduate of the Vietnam National Conservatory of Music in Hanoi, Vietnam's most prestigious conservatory, where she majored in đàn tỳ bà (pear-shaped lute) performance. Later mastering the đàn đáy (long-necked trapezoid lute), she has become a prominent figure in the effort to preserve and promote Vietnam's ancient tradition of ca trù, often appearing in newspapers and on television. The proprietor of a ca trù house in Hanoi's historic old quarter, she gives regular performances with her teachers, Nguyễn Thị Chúc and Nguyễn Phú Đẹ (aged 83 and 90) and the most gifted students from her private academy.

Huệ is in Cleveland (her first time in the U.S.) from April through June 2013, sponsored by The Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion international artist residency program. She is hosted by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio which has engaged Hue in many workshops with youth in the Cleveland Public Schools and connected her to local musicians as well. Her visit represents only the second time a ca trù artist has come to perform in the United States and share this musical tradition, and her performances will be the first-ever solo ca trù recitals in this country.

For her Shaker Heights performance, Huệ will be joined by her 14-year-old daughter Nguyễn Huệ Phương, herself a promising singer, having studied ca trù intensively since the age of 5 and taking courses at the National Conservatory.

For an intercultural finale in the spirit of Creative Fusion, Huệ will perform several collaborative pieces representing musics from four continents: Ismail Douglas (guitar and berimbau), Josh Sherman (tabla), Linda Thomas Jones/Iyanifa Fasi Irunsewe (voice and djembe), and David Badagnani (sheng).

The performance will be followed by a reception featuring a tasting of several rare Vietnamese green and flower-scented teas, as well as a selection of Vietnamese cakes and pastries.

The concert is made possible by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio through The Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion Program, an urban-based international artist residency program that brings up to twelve international artists to Northeast Ohio each year for three-month residencies with area cultural institutions. Invited artists get the opportunity to develop new work and share a contemporary view of their culture with our community.
