THE PLAY

Night Must Fall is set in a bungalow, Forest Corner, deep in the English woods.

The owner, Mrs. Branson, is a domineering, but very wealthy, widow and

hypochondriac. Olivia, her niece and paid companion, is unhappy and lonely and

longs for a life different than the one which fate has handed her. A feisty

housekeeper, flustered maid, and genial neighbor round out the ‘regulars’ at

Forest Corner when a murdered woman’s body is discovered nearby. Enter Dan,

whose charm and personality lights up the room, lifts the spirits of all, and earns

him a spot in the household. But is he what he appears, or is something not quite

right about him? From there, a diabolical game of cat and mouse begins,

climaxing in a desperate race to prevent yet another murder. Terror, suspense,

and a shocking conclusion make Night Must Fall a perfectly thrilling

entertainment.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Except as noted, all characters have standard British accents.

Please note: ages refer to what you can play, not what’s on your birth certificate!

MRS. BRAMSON - 50s or older; fussy, not-very-pleasant, controlling; a

hypochondriac who enjoys ill health and the attention it brings.

OLIVIA GRAYNE - Mid 20s to mid 30s. Attractive, but not remarkably so. Has a

sad, lonely air about her.

HUBERT LAURIE - Mid 30s or slightly older; Genial, pleasant. Is sweet on Olivia.

NURSE LIBBY - Mid 20s or older; Very patient, no-nonsense manner.

MRS. TERENCE - Mid - 40s or older; Mrs. Bramson's cook/housekeeper; fearless

and outspoken. Cockney, if at all possible. She provides comic relief.

DORA PARKOE - 20s; Mrs. Branson’s maid. Attractive, but scattered. Not overly

bright, she alternates between timidity and hysterics. Can be Cockney or have a

Yorkshire accent.

INSPECTOR BELSIZE - 50s - mid 60s. Professional police official from Scotland

Yard. Keen mind and a dry way of expressing himself.

DAN - mid 20s - mid 30s. Pleasant appearance and very charming manner. Has

a ‘baby face’ and looks younger than his age. But there is something a bit odd

about Dan and the actor playing him will need to vary between charming and

sinister - with both appearing equally genuine. Has an Irish accent (Welsh or

Scottish could work, too.) This is not a thick brogue but more of a lilt.
