Rule #1 Don't use your grandmother

as a reference! No, don't use

anybody that you know personally.

Aunts, uncles. Wife, kids. Friends

and family. No.

Bosses, teachers, supervisors --

we're going to give an honest

opinion about you and your work.

Your grandmother isn't. Okay?


BOSS

I don’t mean to be short. But,

honestly, my people look at

hundreds of applications a day. If

you spell "Dear Mister..." with two

t’s, then why should I even bother

reading the rest of your cover

letter? And if your letter stinks,

then why should I read your resume?

And so on, ad nauseum.

Think about it. Did I get this job

by flailing around like an idiot?

No, I came prepared. And so should

you.

So learn to write, be passionate

about what you do, and don’t just

sleep walk through it!

If you had done all that, you would

have this job by now. And we could

do this every morning. Lucky you.

Too bad, so sad. Now get out of my

office! I have work to do.
