EVENT: Final Weekend to See Dover Players New Comedy, SMOKE RING !

The Dover Players community theater group celebrates the summer season with
the world premiere of a

new comedy, SMOKE RING, written and directed by award-winning local
playwright, Gregory J. Lavelle.

A word from our playwright.

"My play, SMOKE RING, is a comedy about faith and procrastination, an
admonishment to make the most of life and savor it, for it may be over at
any moment". I first started writing it as a short story "a little while
ago" - in 1978. The tag line of the play is, "It ain't that serious. It's
just the end of the world". The play takes place in a computer lab at Case
Western Reserve University where graduate student, Charlie Morris, is
assigned to monitor the stars, but, sorta "puts it off" until an anomaly,
Smoke Ring is poised to wipe out all of humanity. The play tracks the final
three weeks before the arrival of Smoke Ring through the eyes of Charlie,
the scientists, the media and a man and woman on the street. The comedy and
mystery is provided mainly by Elsie, the Liquid Crystal Computer, which
replies literally and frustratingly to all questions. Elsie always tells
the literal truth to the specific questions asked leaving Charlie and the
less astute members of the audience astray.

The two main characters, Charlie and Warren are me talking to me. Charlie
is the nice guy who never gets around to accomplishing anything and Warren
is a man who has strong faith in God and who knows that our purpose in life
is to make the most of it and to appreciate the most important things family
and friends.

When I write plays with an "unpredictable" ending, I leave clues which would
give the astute audience members hints as to the conclusion. My first play,
a comedy, Jake's Dilemma, the mystery for Jake and the audience to solve is
whether a tourist couple claiming to be from New York are actually
extraterrestrials. I have also written an audience interactive jury trial
murder mystery, A Question of Guilt, with four different endings where the
clues change subtly from performance to performance to lead the audience to
discover the proper murderer.
