AUDITION PREPARATION
Karamu is seeking 6 African American males and 1 African American female.Please prepare
2 contrasting monologues no more than 2 minutes each. All will be asked to do a cold
reading from the script. Please bring Headshot and Resume.
Th is is a non - equity production.

LOCATION 2355 east 89th Street, Cleveland Ohio

ABOUT THE PLAY
From Within the confines of an upscale Washington, DC flower shop, and in the course
of one day, six men and one courageous woman come to terms with being African American
in the new millennium. As they debate everything from slavery to aids, oral sex to
crack cocaine and religion to homophobia, simmering conf icts finally boil over forcing
them to confront their contradictions and show their true colors.Th is will be the third
production of this extraordinary play. It received rave reviews during Its World Premiere
at Th e Chicago Th eatre Company. Th e play garnered five theatre Alliance Awards including
the Lorraine Hansberry Award for Best Writing of a Play. [Contains Adult Themes
and Content]It is currently in pre-production for a featured film with Harry Lennix.

CAST OF CHARACTERS
KYLE: Assistant cut fl ower buyer, in charge of deliveries. (Early 40’s-50’s)
BRIAN: Cut flower worker and delivery man. Has a young son.(30’s)
RONNIE: Cut flower worker and delivery man. Has two young sons.(20’s)
KEVIN : Cut flower worker and college graduate.(30’s)
MARK: Cut flower worker and the father of a young daughter. (30’s)
PAUL: Cut flower worker and delivery man. A former musician who has a
drinking problem.Has a teenage daughter. (late 30’s-40’s)
RHONDA: Switchboard operator for Benson’s. Mother of four children.
Th is character is heard, but never seen. (30s- 40’s)

Selected Actors will be required to participate in Cut Flower training during the rehearsal
period.

REHEARSALS will start the week of Sept 16, 2013, and will consist of a 6 week rehearsal
schedule, 3-6 time per week.
