*The Play:*



THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA takes place in Italy in the summer of 1953.
Margaret Johnson, the wife of a well-heeled American businessman, is
touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing,
Clara, a beautiful yet surprisingly childish young woman, loses her hat in
a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of
Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This
brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and
intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio.
Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and
Fabrizio apart. As THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA unfolds, a secret is revealed:
in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is
not quite all that she appears. Unable to suppress the truth about her
daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her
own hopes as well.

*Production and Rehearsal dates:** **The Light in the Piazza *will open on
Friday, January 31 and run through February 16, 2014. There will be 9
performances over this period. Rehearsals will begin the first week in
December. Of course if you are involved in another show we will work around
your conflicts. We will be off during the holidays; resuming rehearsals on
January 5, 2014. Rehearsals will generall be Sunday late afternoon through
Friday evenings.

*Audition Information: *There is a possibility that I will have one Special
Appearance contract. *ALL roles are compensated.* No audition appointments
are necessary nor is there a need to prepare a monologue. After a vocal
audition you will read directly from the script. Almost all the roles
require you to not only learn and deliver lines in Italian but also sing in
Italian.

Musical Director Jordan Cooper suggests that each actor and actress prepare
16 to 32 bars of a Rodgers and Hammerstein style ballad. You also might
want to bring in an Italian piece but it is definitely NOT required.

The following ranges are important for you to consider before auditioning:

 *Clara: A4-A6*

*Margaret: A4-A6*

*Franca: B4-F6*

*Signore: N – C4-C6*

*Fabrizio: A3- A5*

*Signor: N – A3 – E4*

*Giuseppe: G3 – F4*

*Priest: E3 – D4*

* **All other cast members will fall into standard voice ranges. Tenors
sing a B5 at one point.  For more information concerning the music, please

*The Roles:*

*Margaret Johnson*: An elegant, self-possessed woman in her late 30’s to
mid 50’s.

*Clara Johnson*: Margaret’s daughter, who is beautiful, naïve and young for
her age of 26 years.

 *Fabrizio Naccarelli*: A 20 to 22 year old good looking and charming
Florentine.

*Giuseppe Naccarelli*: Fabrizio’s older brother; between the ages of 25 and
29 years old.

*Franca Naccarelli*:. Giuseppe’s wife who is early to late twenties.

*Signor Naccarelli*: Fabrizio’s father. Late 40’s to 50’s. Speaks in
heavily accented English. Also speaks Italian.

*Signore Naccarelli*: Fabrizio’s mother. Mid 40’s to 50’s. Speaks very
little English.

 *Roy Johnson*: Margaret’s Husband who is between 40 and 55 years old.

 *Tour Guide*: Male. Mid twenties to thirties.

*Priest:* Late 30’s to 50’s.

*The Ensemble*: Between 4 and 8 assorted men and women.
