The
Exonerated,
by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, a critically acclaimed play about six
exonerated survivors of death row, opened this past weekend at the Tri-C East
Theatre Arts Department. Watching this docu-drama piece was similar to
watching an extremely important and fascinating surgical procedure. But
instead of a scalpel, the director (Brian Zoldessy), used a laser. I’ve seen
this play twice before viewing Tri-C’s production. Most productions stick
to the suggested production style: actors sitting in chairs, spots lights
appearing on each character as they tell their stories directly to the
audience. This approach always works well, but the show at the Eastern
Campus is presented very differently. The actors move: from place to
place, location to location. It’s like watching a dance. The entire
ensemble is sculpted and choreographed in light, as their stories
unfold. The production is beautiful to watch, incredibly interesting to listen
to, and very moving. The night I was in attendance, audience members
gasped at a description of a botched execution, and were moved to tears by the
harrowing events the six exonerated experienced. Kudos to the entire
cast, which includes professional actors, as well as theatre majors. It
was a combination that really paid off in this educational setting, as the pros
lead the way (Peter Lawson Jones, Keith E. Stevens, Sally Groth, Skip Corris,
Allen Branstein, Jeanne Task, David Hundertmark, Doug Pratt), and the students
(Demitrius Brown, Joe Filsinger, Cat Lally, Alyssia Haywood), rose to the
occasion, and held their own very well. Additional kudos to the set and
lighting designer (Marcus Dana). The director/designer concept worked
beautifully.
