Karamu's Arena Theatre has room for you in the audience to see Gavin Lawrence's Cut Flowers! Don't think this is just a Karamu single-set production with a bunch of young black guys trying to get through the day as flower cutters and delivery guys at Benson's Flower Shop in Washington, D.C. The show is set in the back of a flower shop and the six guys do tend to play the dozens and poke fun at each other and talk about their insecurities and pain, and communal responsibility and forgiveness. They also come to realize that all of the black faces in the flower shop are in the back of the white-owned shop.
The cast works well together to deliver this production. There's the politically aware fellow Kenny (Dyrell Barnett) who talks like Malcolm X. There's Mark (Anthony Brown), a decent man ridiculed for letting his wife beat him up on a regular basis. Brian (Michael May) struggles with petty crime. Ronnie (Prophet Seay) likes to play around on his wife. And good-hearted Paul (Greg White) fights off booze. All are manipulated by Kyle (Kenny Parker), a loyal worker who deserves a lot more from the owner of the store than he appears likely to get. Rhonda performed by (Tonya Broach) is never seen and is the woman that cares about them all and is the VOICE answering the phone and keeps it all together. Directed by Terrence Spivey
