Show Synopsis

Set during the Holocaust in one of the most brutal periods in history, this play is based on the
actual diary of Anne Frank, a young girl who comes of age while hiding from the Nazis in a tiny,
overcrowded attic in Amsterdam. Mr. Kraler and his assistant, Miep, prepare the hiding place in
rooms above their place of business, and arrange for the Franks and others, including Mrs. Van Daan,
Mr. Van Daan and their son Peter, to hide there from the Nazis. They are joined by dentist, Mr.
Dussel and together, they try to avoid detection while waiting for Holland to be liberated by the
Allies. Throughout their hiding, simply meeting basic needs becomes a challenge for the inhabitants,
and minor incidents in their life in hiding present grave risks for all of them. During their
confinement, Anne discovers herself as a beautiful, thoughtful, and extraordinary girl. Her story is
a timeless reminder to us all of man's inhumanity to man, but more important, of the power of the
human spirit. Anne's family includes her father, Otto Frank, her mother Edith Frank and Anne's
older sister, Margot.

CAST & DESCRIPTIONS

Anne Frank (Age 12 to 16)

She is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank. She is a lively, curious girl of 13 at the
beginning of the play. She remains optimistic throughout the months they are in hiding and always
makes the best of each situation. As her diary reveals, she is very introspective and creative and
has a vivid imagination.

Otto Frank (Age 40 to 50)

He is Anne's polite and practical father, and is the head of the "attic family." His calmness and
patience are a contrast for Anne's reserved and nervous mother:

Edith Frank (Age 40-50)

She is Anne's reserved and nervous mother. She loves Anne dearly, but wishes she were more polite
and proper like her sister Margot. As a result Anne and her mother are not close.

Margot Frank (Age 15-19)

Anne's older sister, Margot is much more like her mother than Anne. She is similarly quiet and
reserved like her mother and also modest-the complete opposite of Anne.

Miep Giles (Age 25-35)

The very well-liked, generous secretary in Mr. Frank's office. She helps to protect the families in
hiding. With Mr. Kraler, she brings the families food, supplies and news from the outside world.

Mr. Kraler (Age 35 to 60)

A businessman who works with Miep to help protect the people in hiding, He risks his life to help
his friends.

Peter Van Daan (Age15-18)

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan and a shy, quiet teenaged boy. He becomes a friend and
confidante for Anne during their hiding and they share their first kiss together.

Mrs. Van Daan (Age 40 to 50)

She is the vain and finicky wife of Mr. Van Daan and she

prizes the material things of life, including a fur coat she brought to

the attic with her. These traits all make her the center of much of the

conflict in the attic.

Mr. Van Daan (Age 40 to 50)

The irritable former business partner of Mr. Frank, He and his

family are invited to stay in the attic with the Franks. He is

selfish and openly critical of others, especially Anne.

Mr. Dussel (Age 45 to 50)

Quite difficult to get along with, Mr. Dussell joins the Franks

and the Van Daans after they have been in hiding for about two months.

First Man - Nazi Officer (Age 25-50)

Second Man (Age 18 - 40)

Third Man (Age 18-40)
