*The Center for Arts-Inspired Learning seeks project proposals from
teaching artists who wish to participate in the ArtWorks Afterschool Spring
2014 program. Artworks Afterschool is an arts-based job-training program
for area high school students designed to develop 21st Century skills for
the workplace through apprenticeships in the arts. Selected artists will
work with diverse populations of young people with a broad range of
artistic experience. Teaching artists create a learning environment where
apprentices sharpen skills in time and project management, collaboration,
professional communication, problem solving, and critical thinking.
Apprentices are guided through the process of creating their own original
art as they gain real-world project experience. Apprentice work is
showcased at a culminating event/exhibition open to the public. Proposals
from artists of all visual art and fashion/textile disciplines will be
considered.*

*Where and when will ArtWorks take place? *ArtWorks will take place at the
Halle Building, 1228 Euclid Avenue, downtown Cleveland. The program will
operate *January 28 through April 10, two days per week (Tuesdays &
Thursdays) from 4:30-7:30PM.* Occasional Saturdays may be required for
special events. ArtWorks teaching artists will be involved in the
selection of prospective ArtWorks apprentices by *interviewing applicants
from 3:00 – 6:00pm, December 16 & 17, 2013*. Willingness to participate in
the interview process is encouraged and highly preferred. The master
teaching artist orientation will be *Tuesday December 3 from noon-2pm*, and
will take place at the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning Offices at Shaker
Square.

*What would my role be?*Teaching artists mentor 8-10 student apprentices,
in groups called co-ops, to impart 21st Century work & life skills
including critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration,
goal/project/time management, personal responsibility, group leadership,
professional communication, and adaptability to change. Artists are
required to aid apprentices in developing documentation of apprentice’s
work. This may consist of pictures, video, CD/DVD, etc. Teaching artists
and apprentices should encourage the public to observe and interact with
apprentices at work. At least one public performance/exhibition of
apprentice work will take place at the end of the program. Collaboration
across art disciplines is an essential component of the experience.
Teaching artists will complete a formal evaluation of apprentices at the
mid-point and end of the program providing feedback to apprentices on their
development as an apprentice artist and employee. Both artists and
apprentices are paid. Artists work as independent contractors while
apprentices are hired as temporary employees. Artists receive $50 per
working hour while the program operates (Jan 28-April 10). Please note:
teaching artists will not be compensated for their time during the
apprentice interview sessions, or teaching artist orientation.

*How do I apply? *Prospective ArtWorks teaching artists must submit a
completed application and proposal; to request a proposal contact
artworks at arts-inspiredlearning.org or 216.561.5005 x17. In order for the
Center for Arts-Inspired Learning to adequately evaluate a teaching artist
for consideration, all requested materials and information must be received
prior to the deadline. Finalists will be invited for an interview and asked
for references. *Background checks are required and must be completed at
the applicant’s expense prior to final acceptance as an ArtWorks teaching
artist.* After acceptance, all artists will meet with ArtWorks staff to
discuss a program theme, determine logistic and budget needs, and develop
appropriate project plans. *Applications and proposals must be received no
later than 5:00 pm on Friday, November 15, 2013.*
