The Theatre Department at Lake Erie College will present a fantasy adventure based upon the Roald Dahl book "The Witches." The script is adapted by David Wood and will be directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Jerry Jaffe. The performances will be held November 7, 8, 9, 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and November 10 and 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theatre in Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts.

"The Witches" tells the story of a boy who encounters a meeting of witches and gets himself turned into a mouse. The boy is played by sophomore Connor McCarthy who is being raised by his grandmother, played by freshman Jessi Gobel. The evil Grand High Witch will be played by alumna Hilary Barnett. The remainder of the play shows how the boy gets revenge on all the witches. Those who are familiar with Dahl's most famous book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" love his wit, charm and ability to make a story for young audiences while still being compelling.

Various other cast members are Lake Erie College students Cheryl Andrews, Emily Ingle, Gabe Chauvis, Alexis Grice, Christina Pratt, Christoffer Likens, Marie D'Ambrosia and Grant Strlich-Waybright. The cast also includes area actor Alex Spondike. The stage manager is sophomore Sarah Escadon. The sets and costumes are designed by alumna Julie Harter, who is also supervising the painting. The lighting design is by College instructor Michael Breeze.

During the play, there are several stage illusions such as showing the boy being turned into a mouse. Lake Erie College Professor of Psychology Stephen Yachanin is advising the production staff on how to bring this type of witchcraft alive. Yachanin is an accomplished illusionist who sometimes uses magic in his classes to illustrate points about perception and brain functions. 

Ten percent of the royalties from the sales of the play will go to the Roald Dahl Foundation, which supports specialist pediatric nurses and provides help for child brain, blood and literacy disorders.

The play features witches and slightly scary material but is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are free to all Lake Erie College students, faculty and staff; $5 for the community. Audience members 12 and under are free. Each matinee will include cake and snacks after the show. No reservations are necessary.
