NWPL seeks diverse actors for six 10-minute plays on Trayvon, Race, and Privilege

Akron,OH—Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture (CATAC) and New World Performance Laboratory (NWPL) in collaboration with Ma’Sue Productions and in association with The New Black Fest will auditon actors for "Facing Our Truth: 10-Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race and Privilege," a free staged reading of plays and a folk opera addressing the subject of race in the United States.  Auditions will take place on Sunday, January 19, at 5pm in The Balch Street Theatre, 220 South Balch Street, Akron, OH 44302.  Actors should be prepared for cold readings. The free staged reading will be presented at 7:30 PM in the Balch Street Theatre on February 5, 2014 at 7:30 PM as part of The University of Akron’s Rethinking Race: Black, White, and Beyond activities.  February 5 is Trayvon Martin’s birthday and theatres across the country will join CATAC/NWPL in presenting these plays on that date.  The theatre is a vital community forum for exploring difficult subjects and few are as difficult to address as race and privilege in the U.S. With this staged reading, the producers hope to spark discussion and community reflection on these issues.  A post-show discussion will follow the staged reading.

The evening will feature Some Other Kid by A. Rey Pamatmat (directed by India Burton), Night Vision by Dominique Morisseau (directed by Kenneth Wilson), Colored by Winter Miller (directed by India Burton), The Ballad of George Zimmerman by Dan O’Brien in a collaboration with the musician Quetzal Flores (directed by JT Buck), No More Monsters Here by Marcus Gardley (directed by Thurayya UmBayemake), and Dressing by Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah (directed by Avery McCullough).
The playwrights were commissioned by New Black Fest to write about the subject following the protests and discussions after George Zimmerman was acquitted of killing Trayvon Martin.  The directors are local theatre artists engaged by CATAC/NWPL.
These six works premiered in New York City on December 5, 2013 and, besides Akron, the work will be performed in other locations, including the Alliance Theater in Atlanta, GA; the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, CA; the Goodman Theater in Chicago, IL; Center Stage in Baltimore, MD; the Woolly Mammoth in Washington, D.C.; and The Public Theater and the National Black Theater in New York, NY.
