The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Based on the novel by Elizabeth George Speare
Adapted by Y York
Newberry Award Winner

This exciting story of a girl named Kit, captured the eyes of the world and won numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal. The story follows a wealthy girl leaving a comfortable life in Barbados to live with her Puritan cousins in 1687 colonial Connecticut. Upon her arrival in New England, Kit finds the lifestyle very different than her life in Barbados -- the labor intense and the religious rules confining. Overwhelmed by the changes she is forced to undertake, she escapes to the meadows meeting Hannah Tupper, a Quaker commonly known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond. Because Hannah's religious convictions differ from the Puritan lifestyle
dominating the community, she has been branded a witch and shunned. Hannah befriends Kit, and joins her diverse group of friends -- Nat Eaton, whom Kit met on the ship to the Americas, and Prudence, a young Puritan girl. Kit tries to adapts to Puritan life but doesn't agree with all of the Puritan ways. When the community starts to speak of witchcraft Kit must decide what is most important. Holding to her own beliefs or conforming to the beliefs of her new family and community.
