42nd Annual Lakeland Jazz Festival.

Lakeland Civic Jazz Orchestra and the Case Western Reserve Big Band.

will open the festival.
Lakeland's 42nd Annual Jazz Festival event schedule:
Friday, February 21
8:00 p.m.
The Dan White Sextet
Featuring Theron Brown on Piano
Pre-Concert Performance at 7:15 p.m. by the CSU Jazz Combo under the
direction of Bill Ransom
$12 general public; $7 students
The Dan White Sextet is a band that blends soul, jazz, rock, R&B, and
hip-hop, in a style intended to create fresh, honest and feel good music.
The group began in 2010 when Dan White, Chris Ott and Jon Lampley met at
The Ohio State University. The group quickly developed into a sextet band
driven to write original compositions, and craft inventive interpretations
of American pop music.
“DW6,” as they have come to be known, have garnered an eclectic musical
background. White has received awards from Downbeat magazine for
composition as well as solos. He also played saxophone in the Disneyland
All-American College Band with Ott, who has earned accolades for his
trombone playing and his arrangements for small instrumental and vocal
ensembles. Lampley comes from the gospel-music tradition, and has recently
gained experience playing trumpet on tour with the platinum-selling, rock
band O.A.R.
Rather than trying to adhere to today’s constantly changing pop culture
climate, the Dan White Sextet strives to define its own path: to create
genuine, original music that is inspired by the voices of the past and the
soundtrack of the present; the music for life in the next ten minutes as
well as in ten years.
Theron Brown will be featured on piano. Brown is a recent graduate of The
University of Akron jazz studies department and recently finished tours
with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Carmen Lundy
Featuring an All-Star Line-Up with Patrice Rushen on piano, Ralph Peterson
on drums, and Kenny Davis on bass
$25 general public; $10 students
Carmen Lundy began her professional career in Miami as a jazz vocalist and
composer when there were very few young, gifted and aspiring jazz
vocalists on the horizon. Over three decades later, she is celebrated
throughout the world for her vocal artistry and is highly regarded for her
jazz innovation.
Grammy winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album of 2011, Terri Lyne Carrington’s
Mosaic Project features Lundy's composition “Show Me A Sign,” with her
original performance from the album “Solamente” reinvented on the
arrangement.
The Grammy-nominated and highly-regarded 2012 release “Changes” (Afrasia
Productions) is on several "Top 10 Albums of 2012" lists, and continues to
garner both critical and popular acclaim. Juan Rodriguez of The Montreal
Gazette said she is “a classic jazz singer–not retro, but the real
deal–with an adventurous style and imposing voice. Always a rare treat.”
Lundy has had several top ten albums on JazzWeek (“Jazz and the New
Songbook-Live at The Madrid,” “Come Home,” and “Changes”) and a #3 spot on
Billboard’s Jazz Chart for 23 weeks with her debut album “Good Morning
Kiss.”
Having recorded more than twelve albums as a leader, her far-reaching
discography also includes performances and recordings with such musicians
as brother and bassist Curtis Lundy, Ray Barretto, Kenny Barron, Bruce
Hornsby, Mulgrew Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Kip Hanrahan, Courtney
Pine, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Marian McPartland, Regina
Carter, Steve Turre, Geri Allen, Robert Glasper, Patrice Rushen, and the
late Kenny Kirkland.
Patrice Rushen
On piano will be Patrice Rushen. Rushen has spent a lifetime honing the
skills that make her one of the music industry’s most versatile and sought
after artists. In 1998, she was honored by the music industry when her
adult contemporary CD, “Signature,” received a Grammy nomination. The CD
also received an NAACP Image Award nomination and also landed in the top
ten of the adult contemporary jazz charts. The critically lauded, chart
topping style she championed in the 70s and 80s, a jazz/R&B/pop fusion
that combines melodic accessibility with instrumental prowess became her
signature style and continues to be a mainstay of popular radio.
Rushen has amassed an impressive list of “firsts.” She was the first woman
to serve as musical director for the 46th, 47th & 48th Annual Grammy
Awards, the first woman in 43 years to serve as head composer/musical
director for television’s highest honor, the Emmy Awards, and the first
woman musical director of the NAACP Image Awards, an honor she held for 12
consecutive years. Rushen has also been the only woman musical
director/composer for the People’s Choice Awards and HBO’s Comic Relief.
She was the only woman musical director/conductor/arranger for the CBS
late-night television talk show, “The Midnight Hour.” In addition, Rushen
was named the musical director/composer for Newsweek’s first American
Achievement Awards, broadcast from the Kennedy Center and she served as
the musical director for Janet Jackson’s World Tour, “janet.”
Rushen's feature film composing credits include “Men In Black,” “Waiting
To Exhale,” Sandra Bernhardt's “Without You I'm Nothing,” and Robert
Townsend's breakthrough film, “Hollywood Shuffle.”
Considered one of the world's top jazz pianists, Rushen has performed
with, and produced for, such esteemed artists as Stevie Wonder, Herbie
Hancock, Prince, Lionel Hampton, Carlos Santana, Boys II Men, George
Benson, Jean Luc Ponty, Tom Jones, Nancy Wilson, Michael Jackson, Dianne
Reeves, Sheena Easton, Stanley Turentine, Joshua Redman, and many more.
She has played at some of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals and
events.
She has 14 solo albums to her credit and a greatest-hits anthology
released on Rhino Records in 1997.

About the Lakeland Jazz Festival
The 42nd Annual Lakeland Jazz Festival, is a presentation of the Creative
& Liberal Arts Division. The annual event was founded by Lakeland
Professor Charles M. Frank (retired), who also served as the music
department coordinator. Lakeland's Jazz Festival has remained true to its
original mission of instilling the excitement and magic of jazz education
to the younger generation of musicians. Over 25,000 middle and high school
musicians from throughout the state have participated in the festival in
celebration of this uniquely American art form, jazz. In addition,
Lakeland promotes music education with its summer jazz camps every year.
The camp concludes with evening concerts, which allow students performance
experience in a collegiate setting.
