Play Reading in Beachwood - Irish Theatre
with
Nina Takacs
Thurs March 13 7 pm
25501 Shaker Blvd

Betrayal, murder, redemption and resurrection are all things one can experience
during an evening of Irish theatre. Through the centuries of struggle, famine,
and war the Irish people have produced an astounding inventory of written works.
From the poetic mind of James Joyce to the cryptic genius of Samuel Beckett,
Irish poets and playwrights are some of the most lauded in all of literature. We
will read and discuss two of the more modern examples of Irish playwriting. Terminus, Dublin by Mark O'Rowe is a unique play, written only in monologues.
The three protagonists speak in poetic verse, rhythmically describing a mystical
story of heaven and hell in the city of Dublin. The Beauty Queen of Leenaneby
Martin McDonagh describes its own type of hell; a daughter trapped in
spinsterhood by her sociopathic mother in the Irish countryside. While both of
these plays address typical Irish struggles, they do so in contrasting ways. Terminus is a grotesque, supernatural tale while Beauty Queen's grotesquery is
grounded in reality. The evening is sure to be rife with ghoulish fun as we
delve into the depths of the Irish experience!  Free and open to all . Please register at www.cuyahogalibrary.org.  Contact  Margaret Reardon at 216-831-6868  or email mreardon at cuyahogalibrary.org to arrange for a copy of the play!
